I have some nifty little cloth strips with velcro closers that wrap around my spare spools to keep the line from coming off the spool when not in use. I got them at Cabela’s but it doesn’t appear that they offer them any more. Anyone have a source for them? I suppose I could make my own but I’d rather just buy them if they’re available.
Failing that, what do you use for this purpose? Thanks…
I use the Velcro “tape” that they use to tie together bunches of broccoli at the suppermarket
You can buy the same stuff at farm storm as it’s also used to tie up tomato plants
I have not tried this, but, I have had the loose end of the fly line (while stored on the spool) “work” its way under a wrap or two and then cause problems when you use the spool. If your fly lines have a loop on the end, you could pick up some of the wide rubber bands and loop-to-loop them onto the end of the fly line and then stretch the rubber band around the spool. This would keep the end of the fly line from “working” under a wrap or two of the fly line plus keep the rest of the fly line from coming off while stored.
Ace hardware (and I’m sure other places as well) sell Velcro bands that work quite well for this. They come in a variety of lengths and colors. They also sell continuous length two sided Velcro that you can cut to length. I’ve found it near the electronics section, usually near the zip ties.
Thanks all. Those Grey’s keepers are like what I have; now that I see them they have a sliding ring closure, not velcro. I don’t think Cabela’s offers them any more but I can pick some up elsewhere. Good tips, and the rubber band idea makes a lot of sense!
Go to the DOLLAR STORE and look in the cosmetic/hair products aisle. There are packages of fabric covered rubber bands, I guess they’re used to gather hair in a pony tail(?), that are great for the purpose of encirling tippet spools. Best of all is the price … $1.00 for about 50 bands.
Velcro as Buddy suggested comes in a variety of width, lengths will be the greater challenge; but elastic from Joanne or some similar shop with Velcro or snap will work or you could use a grosgrain ribbon which would not stretch but is a option.
Allan, to expand on your mistake, those elastic bands with the rivet part of a pop rivet removed from the stem and poked through the band are great for tippet spools. You thread your line through the rivet and it unrolls only as much as you need, at least most of the time.
