I am presently corresponding with the State of Alaska Department of Fish & Game statewide coordinator of data management/reporting regarding the issue of licensing and permits (for huntin but certainly applies to fishing).
As it stands right now, if a hunter has any derogatory items against his license (forgot to mail harvest report or the report got lost in the mail), that person becomes ineligible to receive permits for the next season (a penalty that I agree with). However, the issue is that there is not a way for a person to know if they are on this “black list” or not… Due to privacy laws and regulation, this information cannot be made public.
To apply for permits in Alaska, the person must pay in advance a non-refundable fee for the chance to win a random drawing lottery permit. So, if I am on this ineligible list and didn’t know it, I am in essence making a donation to the State of Alaska, which I am not particularly fond of doing, by the way.
One suggestion was the issuance of permanent license numbers for proper identification to allow individuals to view their records. In other words, if a person uses different names such as Ben or Benjamin, presently the database is not able to discern…if a permenanet ID number were used, it makes identification online much easier…
So, my question to you (if you endured to this point), does your state issue a permanent fishing license ID number or allow online access through username/password?
Thanks for your responses…

Sounds like a real pain to have to deal with. Especially when you could be blacklisted for something being lost in the mail.
Here in Nebraska, they do not have permanent licenses (unless you buy the lifetime license) but they key off of your last name, DOB and a partial SSN to pull up your data thru a secure website. ( [url=https://www.greatlodge.com/scripts/ipos/GLNEpermits.cgi:af3dd]Located here[/url:af3dd] ) I have used it to purchase my licenses and stamps for the last few years and it seems to work out quite well.
Not here in WA., however, they may have it in Idaho since when we purchased our fishing licenses there the past two years all the info came up on the stores computer when they typed in our names.
In Oregon I can see online my preference points(hunting thing) with either my drivers license number or an ID number, which I think is permanent. However to find out my draw results I have to use my hunting license number.
My old Oklahoma liscense involved nothing more than a piece of paper with a carbon copy. I think in OK it’s done by your drivers liscence number, which usually happens to be your social security number.
My new Florida liscense operates on drivers liscense number, AND social security number. If you lose your liscense, I was told that you have to go to your county’s tax office with your social security card and get a duplicate copy of your liscense.
I don’t know if anyone can look their info up though, I’ve never tried.
