late April Ohio Steelhead, etc.

I will be fishing the Chagrin or the Grand the weekend of 4/22. My nephew, who I taught to fish, is going to teach me how fish for Steelhead. The circle is completed. Two questions - What are the chances of Steelies still being in the river? Will any other species be biting then? As you can tell, I haven’t done much river fishing. Thanks - Rick.

Im not sure for your area but the MI trib that I visisted this past Easter weekend only 50 fish had crossed the weir for that river. Thats only 50 new fish which doesnt count the hold overs from winter. I had only heard of a few fish that were starting to hit the redds so I think there is still time for some decent fishing (I usually dont fish them on the redds) but some do. Just make sure that you check with the locals and the flyshops around your destination. While fishing for steelies I was hooking up with decent sized browns and smaller rainbows. Prepare to do alot of nymphing.

Rick,

I am by no means an expert. This is my 3rd season and I am still learning. From everything I have read and experienced the last 2 years, there should still be steelhead in the streams by the 22nd. They are just beginning to hit the redds now. They may be beginning to drop back to the lake at that point but that all depends on flow and temperature. You may want to check out “thesteelheadsite” and click on the Ohio page. Lots of chatter, but you can at least get an idea whether the rivers are fishable and if the fish are biting, perhaps an idea of what flies to use. I would also highly recommend getting in touch with the fly shop, Chagrin River Gillies, Mark the owner is a great guy and can offer some suggestions. He can also let you know whether the local smallmouth are starting to bite, and possibly some from the lake entering the rivers. Again depending on temp and flow. I am pretty sure the smallies start to turn on around 50 degrees. Hope you and your nephew have a good time. Good luck - Mike

You can also check www.madriveroutfitters.com[/url:35df8] and look in the fishing reports as they have Guides that work the rivers up there and they post reports every few days if not everyday. Also go to www.ohiogamefishing.com[/url:35df8] and you can get reports on there along with alot of other stuff in and around OHIO. Later Matt

To each there own !

You should have fish still in the streams in good numbers then. The last couple of years we have been catching them up untill the middle of May. My last steelhead caught in an Ohio stream last year was on the Rocky, I was fishing for smallmouth on June 5 and landed a 26 inch fish. If we get some more rainthis weekend we should get another fresh run and these fish should definetly be there 3 weeks from now.
