Large arbor vs backing

Okay, I am not a machinist and I don’t have calipers so bare with me:
Battenkill Mid Arbor III:
Outside diameter of spool:3 1/2"
back side of spool:2 15/16"
center hub diameter: 1 15/16"
width 7/8"

Battenkill Large Arbor III
outside diameter on spool: 3 3/4"
Backside of spool diameter:3 1/2"
center hub diameter: 2 5/8"
width: 1 1/16"

Sorry I can’t be exact, but this is close.

The larger the diameter of the reel, the more line that comes in when you crank 'er; and the larger the diameter of the reel, the harder each turn is to crank. Little fish, go for the big spool. Big fish, go for the little spool.

FG.
I just wanted to let people know that I could fit my head in my butt. Give others a view of how a “Large Arbor” Reel nominclature with a discounted price might fool you by your own mispreceptions.

Remember that 8 wt Scott rod you wanted to know if I would be interested in selling to your brother-in-law. Well, I have a Battenkill Large Arbor 9/10(the original model) that I got at the Orvis Store in Salt Lake City; Dec 2002 I think.

I have thought in the past of trying it with my 4 or 5 weight but have not because of lazyness of taking the 8 weight line off of it plus I figured I would be ridiculed by my fishing buddies.

Thanks Fly Goddess. That is exackery the info I wanted. See, I bought a LA Multiplier reel over the internet, but have no other LA’s so wanted to know what I really bought.

My Sorta stantard Orvis 6wt mid arbor reel:
Reel OD = 3 1/8"
Arbor Diameter = 1 1/2"
Arbor width = 7/8"

My 5/6 LA:
Reel OD = 3 5/8"
Arbor Diameter = 2 5/16"
Arbor Width = 1 1/8"

Sooooo…I did indeed get a Large Diameter Wide arbor. Maybe not as large as others, but I guess it is a true large arbor reel. It is also a multiplier. So every turn of he handle the arbor makes “TWO” complete turns.

Thanks for the info Fly Goddess. Helped me a lot.

No offense taken. It's hard to explain without being able to show 2 reels side by side.Thats exactly what I meant. A true LA Designed reel is a combination of all 3. A true LA Design allows faster line retrieve, line to lay on reel in looser coils, without the lose of backing capacity
Some companies I'll use Teton Tioga reels as an example,a great reel btw I own several with the normal spools. Their LA spools fit the standard reel the only thing you gain is weight and you lose half the space for backing. You gain no advantage of a true LA design reel.I'd rather not lose the backing.

Hope that explains it better,
Tom

Thanks Tom Trout. Much better LOL
Scruffy, I probably sold you that outfit unless it was on the weekend 8) I never worked weekends there.
