Kingery's Better Foam Caddis SBS

The money you save in floatant will go towards purchasing some 1mm foam. Change colors to suit your needs; this would also work as a Spruce Moth.

hook - Dai Riki 320 #14
thread - MFC 8/0 sand
body - 1mm foam tan
hackle - ginger
wing/head - deer hair

Part 1

mash barb, start thread, wrap to bend

cut a foam strip not quite gap width; taper end

tie in foam (didn’t wrap it too tightly - improves adhesion with the wrapped foam body), brush shank with Super Glue and wrap body forward (2 turns at the back give it a bit of reverse taper); tie off/trim

tie in hackle

take a few wraps but leave room at the front; trim hackle on top (don’t know where the focus was on that shot; sorry)

Part 2

clean, stack, measure (tips to bend) a clump of deer hair; trim to length, tie in (take a few wraps through the butts), half hitch x 2, SHHAN

trim out hackle underneath (not necessary with such a buoyant body)

Am I the only one not able to see the photos?

I see them

I do too. Sorry, lastchance.

Chuck

I see them to and you’re missing some beauty pics. Perhaps there is something wrong in your profile settings…just a guess.

Scott, I assume you don’t wrap the foam body too tightly. That would collapse the wee air cells in it, right? Did I just say “wee”? Been watching a lot of Davey McPhail, I guess.

Chuck

Chuck,

Using the thinner 1mm foam, I don’t have to apply as much tension as I would with 2mm (the Super Glue helps, too).

Scott

Sounds good.
