I’m hopelessly addicted to eBay and I found this rod for sale (a couple of them actually) and I’m still a bit “green around the gills” when it comes to shopping for quality gear.
Cortland’s a good company to deal with, so if you have any problems, i’m sure they’ll take care of it.
The rod itself is probably made overseas and may be o.k as a back-up. Can’t say for certain because i’ve never physically checked out that rod.
I don’t know what your financial situation is but if you can afford it I would probably go with something better.
You could pick-up a number of discontinued or less expensive Sage’s on e-bay. Check out the DS2, LE, Launch and Fli rods. They can all be had for a pretty reasonable price.
Yeah, finances are pretty prohibitive. I have a broken St. Croix rod of the same weight, and I’m having trouble sending it in for warranty (I can’t find the receipt but I have the warranty card and other paperwork) and I can’t really afford to go Sage right now, maybe in the future. I’ve just been out of a flyfishing rod for about two weeks now and I’m going nuts. I don’t want the right rod, I want the right now rod.
Darn that nefarious carp and “high stick” reaction while landing him!
Click on “combos” to the left. You can see it is a package intended for a your boy. The actually call it “Boy Fishing Outfit” ??
I don’t think that detracts from the rod however.

I have a Cortland CL 5/6 weight and it is a good rod at a decent price - not sure if they still make that model? The CL has a lifetime warranty. It casts well and looks like a higher end rod.
Funny, my only flyfishing rod is broken and I’m going nuts, yet my spincast rods are all in perfect fishing condition; I’ve lost the will the spincast altogether!
I also have a CL in both the 3/4 7 ft. and the 4/5 9 ft. The 4/5 casts pretty well but it is a fairly heavy rod (at least compared to my Scott) but then again, I’ve also caught a fair number of Deschutes redsides on it and it’s fairly indestructable. If you want a Cortland, I’d spend a little more and get the CL (should be able to find them on Ebay for $40+)
good luck,
Randy
FFR,
Another option, and they ain’t shabby eventhough they are made “off-shore” is TFO (Temple Fork) Fairly inexpensive, fast action generally. Have a couple, nice backup rods. If warranty is an issue, no questions. Have talked with the U.S. reps in TX. Easy to deal with. If Berlin weren’t so far from Hollywood, you could give one of mine a whirl. Just a thought - .02 Mike K.
Live each day as if it were your last, some day you’ll be right!
i own 3 temple forks. series 1 4 wt. moderate action. also 5 and 7wt. in the ticr series.it is what i can afford and honestly all rods cast beautifully. the 5 and 7 wt are fast action. great quality for the price.
