Gosh Robert, what a timely post! There are brush fires all around this end of Utah, and one had the town about 12 miles away evacuated yesterday.
We constructed a priority list. The rods made the top 5, but not the tying gear.

Family, dog, pictures, then flyrods & reels…rods/reels can be replaced…others listed before CANNOT!

My wife, then my dog. Everything else can be replaced.

The two dogs, the fly rods, the beer and the fly tying stuff if time allowed. There’s a lot of fly tying stuff to gather and it would take some time. The old lady is pretty quick and would be grabbing the pictures and important documents. 
On a similar note, Nick Lyons wrote an article about 30 years ago on an apartment fire that burned his book collection, fishing equipment and fly tying stuff. It was pretty powerful stuff. 8T
You had better learn to be a happy camper. You only get one try at this campground and it’s a real short camping season.
Robert - I’m out of dogs right now, and I ain’t yet married to whatsername, and the gear stays in the Suburban. So I’d grab the 2 Collings guitars, then a painting and a glass sculpture that I love, then some more guitars. The flames can cook the necks and chenille such … can’t remember the last time I tied a Trout fly.

Been there. Sometimes there is no time to grab anything, so personal safety is primary.
Very interesting. I’d grab the fly rods and reels first, then the baitcasting and spinning gear then the guns. If any time were left I’d grab the Dyna King Barracuda. I guess you can tell where my heads at.
I’d check on my wife. I’ve had her around for so long that I’d hate to loose her! I don’t have a dog or any other pets so next in line would be my shotgun followed by my Nikon. Lets see…did I forget anything? Hell no the fishing stuff is in the car…let the house burn…com’on lets go fishin’

My kids my wife my dog, pics, guns, and then my rod. The guns mean more to me than the 1.5yr old rod. IMO they can’t be replaced but the rod can. Just thought I should clarify.
xiphius, maybe you should e-mail me about getting rid of some tying materials for trout. That’s if, you don’t use them anymore.“G”

The material would hurt the most and most is replaceable but it would still hurt.
Robert. As a lawyer you ask some interesting questions. On the flip side, I’ve been in the newspaper business since 1967. I’ve never had a major fire, yet I’ve covered so many over the years. For my family, I’ve had toaster flare once, a clothes dryer another time. Thank God for orange juice, which put both fires out. Both reasonably quick. Lucky, I guess. Professionally I’ve come around too many corners where I’ve taken pictures where families have had children die. Extremely tragic. If my house was burning, and I knew that everone was safe, I would get on my knees and beg the firefighters to save the next door buildings and allow my house to burn to the ground. Typically what happens is that they pour water and various chemicals onto a burning structure, be it a house or business, and what remain is a half-butt, burned out thing that is absolutely useless. Let the danged thing burn. Completely. Nothing much is ever saved. Pictures are either smoke or water damaged. Clothes? Forget it. Everything else is chared or smoke damaged to a point of usefulness. I just don’t understand. Save the nearby things and let the house burn to the ground. Then start over. Except for family, anything else can be replaced. What would I save? Just those I love. jgw

After the family it would be fishing gear and hunting gear this way I could keep my family feed.

The first thing would be my fishing logs which I’ve been keeping since 1963. You can’t replace the years of history and information they have. The second thing would the antique fishing equipment I have hanging all over the house–and “yes” I’m not married!!
