Bead-head Gold-ribbed Hare’s Ear.
Anything else with some sparkle and shine to it.
Check out the “Panfish Flies” thread, by cdpaul, further down the page. Lots of good suggestions in there.

Oops, it’s in another forum. My bad. Click here.

nothing. just take along your trout flies and have fun!
Hi 5D,
I think that Normand has a great idea when he suggests just taking your trout flies but I would add a few poppers in size #10-#8. I’m a firm believer in Gurgle Pops for brim and bass but any popper will do. You can find tying instructions for Gurgle Pops in the fly fishing archives (around 2003) Good luck with your outting. 8T ![]()
Kirk,
Thanks for the link. ![]()
Normand,
Thanks for the idea, though there are no trout in this part of the island nation of Ohio. The state stocks some in the winter in the upper parts of the Rocky River; but the waters get too warm to sustain them. ![]()

Size 6, maybe size 4. I prefer black with red legs and white painted lead eyes.
8T,
Found the instructions, I’ll give them a try.

Normand is right fish your trout flies.
A bug is a bug, most fish eat the same things, different versions but the same basic bug, trout flies will catch many gills etc. Don’t get fooled by the name.
Eric
i’m not saying to fish trout flies for trout, i’m saying to fish trout flies because bluegills are kinda stupid and will inhale just about anything tied on a hook and sometimes just the hook!![]()
bluegills eat the same bugs as trout do so why not feed them the same fly?
I agree with Normand, except to say I would leave the teeny tinies at home (smaller than 16). Bluegill will take them, sure, but you may never see them again. I like anything with a peacock body (prince nymphs, zugbugs, etc.) and/or a soft hackle collar. Elk hair caddis are a great dry fly for gills and you probably have some in your trout fly box already. I fish a lot of wulffs for gills as they are very boyant and very durable and gills can be hard on flies.
Elk Hair Caddis in #14-10 will do you well. And Wolly-buggers for underneath. You will be covered. Like Norm said, it’s all in your trout box.
Hoppers, beetles, ants, greeny meanys, San Juan Worms, and Humpies all work for me.
Tie some different colors of each and different styles like hair beetles, foam beetles, foam ants, dubbing ants, foam hoppers, and hair hoppers.
Thanks for the ideas. I had no idea blue gills were so finakey(sp?) an eater :lol:. (Like an Irishman at a beer tasting. Hey I’m Irish I can get away with saying that.))
Norm et al, sorry about the misunderstanding. I guess its time to learn how to tie some trout flies. Yeah I know, how can I call myself a fly fisher without having dry’s in my box. But seriously, the majority of fishing around here requires wet flies, ie. buggers, clousers, nymphs, pukekos etc. Maybe its time to see if I can entice of locals to the surface.
NJTroutbum, WOW you have one fantastic site.
For those of you who don’t regularly click on a poster’s site I encourage you to vist NJTroutbum’s http://home.comcast.net/~rlonghunter/site/

Go to wal mart…buy a blister pack of Bett’s poppers. Problem solved. Use anything in your trout box that’s “big” or be prepared to dig some flies out of a lot of fish because they are eaters!
Any buggy looking fly or popper for the bluegills.
A hardbody sinking black ant is always good. Easy tie.
For the smallmouth I would use Clouser Minnows, Conehead Wooly Buggers, and any good popping bug in sizes 4 to 10. The Sneaky Pete works well.

Jim,
Yellow foam spiders were big for me with the blue gills last year. Easy to tie and inexpensive. I’m not sure if that is the hot color this year because I have not been able to fish much, but they have worked well in the past.
Good luck and have a great time,
Mike
Popper/dropper. Betts popper on top, with a piece of 3or 4X tippet (about 18-24" long) tied of the bend of the popper with a buggy softhackle or sz 10 BH bugger on the end. Strip twitch the popper, pause, repeat.
best of Luck,
aa
