Idaho Bound

We will be traveling to Idaho Falls for our annual vacation.
Boots on the ground next friday the 24th…

Have had have some good experience fishing the the upper fork region over the years, St Anthony up to Yellowstone, but I am new to the falls area.

We will be taking our best arsenal setups consisting of a three, four and a six weight.

The intention is to fish sunks and hoppers… A pond to dunk my woolies for some bass would be nice… The 6weight is setup with a RIO AquaLux line .

Steve, Dang, Have fun up there. I will be in Lee Vining Saturday and Yosemite about Monday to fish Toulomne meadows. Say hi to Kelly and the kid if you see’em. Jim

There are lots of shops in the Idaho Falls area and lots of places to fish. You are only about 2 hours from Dillon, Montana and the Beaverhead River is even closer-- which was fishing pretty good this week – I just left there. One possibility is to call and schedule a guided float down the beaverhead. I didn’t do it- took my own boat, but I ran into a guy in the camp ground in Dillon who had just floated the river the day before and did fantastic – lots of large fish taken on nymphs. He used a guide named Mike Marsh that he booked through Uncle Bob’s Sports shop in Dillon Montana. there are also 3 or 4 other shops in Dillon to choose from.

On the way home, I stopped by the Hyde Drift Boat shop in Idaho Falls and was surprised to find out that they have a huge selection of flies ( wish I had stopped there on the way up) the guy working there - named Jim, can also give you some ideas about fishing in the area.

Good luck and have fun

If I were in Idaho Falls, I’d be thinking about a float trip on the S. Fork of the Snake.

I can appreciate the suggestions about a float trip and using a paid guilde but, would rather spend $ & the time on foot exploring.

Please feel free to chime in with more ideas now that I have detailed
my thoughts on a plan…

Anybody up for a days fishing ??
We can pack up a lunch and have some fun…

I really appreciate the ideas…

Steve

Hey Steve,
You might try to get a hold of John Scott. He may be in Rigby, just a few casts upriver from Idaho Falls. My guess is if you want to find some really great places to fish, he’d be the guy to tie up with.
Your trip is making me jealous. I want to quit my job and join you. But then I wouldn’t be able to afford the gas. Shucks, I can’t afford the gas anyway.

Joe -

Good suggestion.

Actually, Steve and I already exchanged a couple PM’s. Just need to clear up some confusion and make some arrangements.

John

P.S. Your humpy keeps making friends where I fish. Got a number of bows and a cutt with it yesterday on the Lochsa, first time I’ve fished there. Think I’m headed back tomorrow for the good part of a day to see a lot more of it than I did yesterday.

Kglissmeyer and Mgliss are also in the Rigby area and may be up for showing you around.

And, I might add, for the Henry’s Fork and some very special water on the South Fork, these guys know their way around much better than I do.

John

Gents,

Holly post holes! I am excited just at the thought , John and I have

PM to each and will talk again soon

I will be in the area all week stable by Sunday 26th til the 30th.
No doubt I will have some family time needs but should be able to play for a
couple days at some point, Actually will have Saturday 25th to determine
this.

At any rate if this works and John and I can hookup that will be really good
indeed… and REE thank you!

I really consider all you as my fishing buds!

Steve

Steve, you definitely need to give us a call. I’ll PM you with phone #'s and we would be glad to help you find your way around as well as take you to some favorite spots. Looking forward to hearing from you and to meeting you while you’re here.
Sure, Dillon is just up the road with some great fishing, but you don’t have to travel far from IF to get into some world-class, Blue Ribbon fishing that will give you some fond memories through long, cold winters.
John Scott is your best bet to get out on almost a daily basis, but with a little advance notice I can take the time from my job to get you on some great water.
I’m excited you made us your destination and hope we can make the best of it for you.
If you get a chance review my “Dad and the Kid” fishing reports from this year and you’ll see all of the waters we fish here as well as how and with what we catch those beasties. We’ve probably caught more 20-inch plus fish this year than in any of the previous years combined, so we’re confident we can get you into some great action.
Also, make sure you stop into Jimmy’s All Seaon Angler while you’re here. Jimmy runs a first class fly shop and you won’t be disappointed. I agree also that Jim over at Hyde’s will not steer you wrong and you’ll wnat to make a visit to their shop also.

Steve:
Enjoy the trip, Wish I had fly fished when I lived on that side of Idaho. would have made the three years I spent there better. If you get a chance and are driving by stop into the Surplus store just off the highway between Idaho Falls and Blackfoot at the Shelly exit. nice store.
