After reading about them for well over a year, the Cabela’s store near here stocked some Fish Skulls. Tied some up and was impressed with the finished results. Was able to fish them in a tough stretch of river that has a very rocky bottom. I didn’t get hung up nearly as often as with my dumbbells eyes and when I did get hung up was able to free it by moving a minimal amount. Fishing was slow that night so I can’t attest to how affective they are but I was impressed with the looks and fishability. I was fishing with the streamer heads.
What impressions are out there from other users? Thanks:)
interesting you bring this up. I purchased some a few weeks ago for the first time to try out myself. been hearing allot about them so thought I’d give them a try this weekend at one of our local ponds. Tied up a few streamers with them and we’ll see how them work out. I can see the advantage over the standard bead chain or dumbbell eyes.

I too just got some. While at the FF Festival here in Waynesboro, I watched the representitive from Fish Skull tie up some flies and was very impress. I like the look that the included eyes give it and I’m sure they are paintable also. They are much lighter than I first percieved and seem like they would make some nice hook up streamers. I will be tying something with them in the near future and will post them.
Were the facts that fishing was slow and that you weren’t getting hung up as much possibly related? I.e. could it just be the Fish Skulls weren’t getting you on bottom as well? I kind of like the looks of flies tied with them, and went out and bought some, but haven’t used them yet. They seem lighter than I expected.
I have not looked at the fish skull in person, are they strictly a point down product or can streamers be tied with the point up?
Jesse, they are point up or point down. The way they are formed is that they have lighter side and a heavier side. You place the heavy side to which ever you prefer, up or down. It is a nice product. The good thing about them is you tie your fly, whip finish and leave a gap between your materials and the eye of the hook, put some crazy glue(which they state) or epoxy then slide the fish skull on over the eye, push and wiggle rearward so it is seated where you want it then tie a dam infront of it to hold it on. Very easy to use and they come with holographic eyes also.
I have been looking at their sculpin helmets. I saw a crawdad pattern the other day that used them, and was very impressed!

I don’t think the slow fishing was the result of not staying on the bottom as much as it was just being a slow evening. I tied my steamers hook up and was bumping the bottom on a very regular basis. Many times in the past I’ve had big strikes as I pull a fly off a small snag so I believed I was doing a good job of fishing…however the jury is still out on this one as far as I’m concerned.
I wish Fish Skull would list weights on their packages.I bought the gray heads with red eyes in the small-medium size and might want to go a little heavier. My dumbbell eyes I use are 7/32 oz.
We had some hard rains this past week and the river is too flooded and dirty to fish for a while so I’ll just have to wait before I make any more conclusions on fish skulls.
the weights are listed on their web site for each size:
They weigh roughly about the same as an equivalent hook size dumbbell. Weight as follows: Small skull is 0.48 grams (0.017 ounce), Small-Medium skull is 0.79 grams (0.028 ounces), Medium
skull is 1.26 grams (0.044 ounces), and the Large skull is 2.46 grams (0.087 ounces).
