Humminbird Smart Cast Portable Sonar

My family gave me a Smart Cast R20 a few years ago for a present because I am a dedicated bank fisherman. Anyway I started carrying it with me and checking out the waters that I’ve been fishing. Since the unit has to be attached to a med-heavy baitcasting or spin fishing rig it means that I have to carry two rods.

The unit gives you a pretty clear understanding about just what lies under the water. The unit that I have tells the water depth and produces a small graph all on small monitor that mounts to a fishing rod. There is a newer model now that also tells the surface water temp which would be nice. I usually find that I might change my tactics when fishing the water the next time. The only thing that I don’t like about the unit is that the transponder is heavy and makes a giant splash when itis cast and you have to carry a baitcaster or spinning rod with you to use it.

I hope that I am not breaking any of the FF commandments.

Sounds cool,and no your not breaking any Fly fishing rules.

I thought the only rule was “to keepeth thy bvackcast uppeth”.
I don’t follow that one very often either.

Rick

sounds good but i heard that when the battery goes dead you cannot replace it??is this true??

Flyand Tie

When the battery in the display dies it’s a few bucks for a new watch battery. When the remote sensor dies you have to replace it. A new sensor costs either $20.00 or $25.00 depending on which model you have. The sensors are supposed to last 400 to 500 “wet” hours again depending on which model you buy. I’ve had mine for a few years and have only had to replace the watch battery once.

www.humminbird.com has all of the information.

Greg;
I’ve found them to be very handy when checking bottom structure and looking for fish. You can search a 100’ circle without wearing out your legs, arms or the trolling motor battery!

I have a depthfinder on my kayak. Not only does it indicate depth/structure/etc., I have seen fish on it, spun the kayak around and cast to the spot where I was and caught fish. So, Greg, if “they” put you in FF purgatory, you’ll have company 'cause I ain’t giving mine up! :wink: :lol:

My fly rod isn’t connected to my fish-finder they work independently of each other. I find fish with one, I try to catch fish with the other and the use of the one doesn’t make the use of the other better. So, there’s no violation of any “rules.” Besides the fact there are no rules in flyfishing. My finder is mostly used for depth and structure finding, the fish are just a bonus.

Now, if I could just get some device that will place the fish onto the hook and automatically reel it in for me, clean and cook it, and serve it on fine bone china by candlelight… (I already have a wife and she refuses) just kidding! :lol:
