How many guides on a 11ft switch rod

I am just about to start building a switch rod and i need how many and the sizing chart.
Thanks Nick

Here’s a couple links; might help:

ps - I’d really take a look over at rodbuilding.org, great site and the folks there are more than willing to share their knowledge.

Regards,
Scott

My calculator says 12 guides on a 11 foot rod

I use the guide calculator found here…

That is a very good calculator, too.

I usually start by looking at the manufactures’ recommended chart and then decide from there. If they do not have one look at similar blanks on other companies charts.

I was told back in the 70’s the general rule of thumb for any Fly Rod is “1 guide per foot + 1” so 11 + 1 = 12 guides. I have followed that formula since then.

I have an 11 foot Sage Z-Axis 6 wt, 4 piece rod which can be used as a switch rod but I just cast single handed. The rod has 12 guides. The butt section has none. The next two sections have 3 each. The tip section has 6.
