Houghton Lake Special SBS

A Michigan pattern from the 40’s, probably the creation of Bob Jewel. Meant to be fished as a dry or a streamer, the materials definitely lean towards the latter.

hook - Dai Riki 700 #4
thread - UTC 140 black
tail - poly yarn red (original called for wool; this was my one concession to something with positive buoyancy)
rib - large tinsel silver
body - chenille black
wing - bottom 1/3 bucktail white; top 2/3 bucktail brown
hackle - brown heavy (a study in optimism or futility)

Part 1

mash barb, start thread, tie in poly yarn, wrap to bend; trim (gap width)

tie in rib

strip end of chenille, tie in

wrap chenille to 3/4 mark; tie off/trim

rib body; tie off/trim

even tips on white bucktail, measure (a bit past the tail); tie in/trim

Part 2

repeat with the brown (a good dose of Sally on the butts helps keep everything in place)

tie in hackles (2 used here)

wrap, tie off/trim, whip finish, SHHAN

Regards,
Scott

Hey, I might have to try this myself

Ok, I did some. I didn’t see that you had used 2 hackles per fly. I was thinking that when I was tying mine. Guess I should have acted on it. I didn’t have the poly yarn, or red wool. I do, however, have some egg yarn, and used that. My silver tinsel is a holographic tinsel. Bet you can guess which one was my first one

That pattern works well at night for larger browns on the Au Sable near Grayling. I used it one night on a float with guide Joe Guild.
