I was looking at the J Stockard catalog and saw the Partridge G3AY Heavy Sproat Wet Barbless Fly Hook. They only show the hook up to size 8, but for smaller deer hair bugs that should be big enough. Has anyone here tried to spin deer hair on that hook? It looks as if it is sturdy enough and the clearance should be good, but wanted to check for others’ experiences.
I’ve spun deer hair on #16 dry fly hooks for Goddard Caddis. Haven’t used that particular hook you’re asking about but I don’t think you’d have much problem rotating ungulate hair around the shank.
Looks like an everyday nymph hook to me. No reason why you could not use it, as Scott pointed out, but I tend to favor a hook with a bit more gape personally for a normal spun deer pattern.
I’ll be clipping the bottom so the gap “should” be ok. <crossing fingers> I have bent a number of hooks when spinning deer hair and that is my main concern with new hooks.
