Holy cow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So far I’ve heard back from 3 people (Phil Hooks, GBurgFisher, and MNFisher). If you are interested in participating in this, I need to hear back from you asap. My plan is to set up an escrow account for everyone to deposit their share of the $2800 into. I’ll do this tomorrow if I hear back from at least 9 people total (that would make 10 people counting myself that are interested in this). Again, I have to have this put together by the 12th to stop this guy from putting the rods back up for sale, or sell them off individually.

Oh Boy …this is really interesting…please keep the rest of us appraised of how this is going and works out…

Hey, I may have to use your method to tell my 6 kids how to divvy up

Disclaimer:
Due to the possible complications :), I hereby withdraw my offer to arbitrate, play medic etc. BUT… at that price, a blind drawing is probably the fairest. Assign a number to each rod and pick numbers PERIOD. This stuff about " I’d like a Monty 3/4 wt "just AIN’T gonna work. Chances are you’ll get a few good rods with this method. AND, if you don’t, that’s the luck of the draw. If you’re very concerned about not getting “value” for your investment ($280) you probably shouldn’t be in this deal to begin with.

Diane, if you could email me with your confirmation, that would be most appreciated (it just makes it a bit easier for me to keep track of who’s definitely in this thing). As for the sorting process, Marco is right, sorting through every rod and trying to give every single person exactly which rod they want would just be a nightmare. MNFisher had a great suggestion:

“Here’s a thought for you. Now that a purchase will be made, you don’t need any grief over who gets what rod - or how it gets done. I’ve been a part of something like this before and here is how it was successfully handled. The organizer (you) puts the rods in 10 piles (if that’s how many buyers there are) of equal value and composition. (Different rods manufacturers and weights adding up to about the same value in each lot) The ten buyers names are put in a hat. One name is randomly drawn for each pile. Your involvement is over - everyone was treated equally and fairly. Anyone that wants to trade can do so afterwards among the group - or anywhere they want without you being in the middle. Best to confirm the process before the purchase is actually.”

Also, I plan to include the email addresses of all parties involved, and which rods they have been assigned, so that if anyone is wanting to trade rods with each other, it will be a fairly simple matter for them to do so. As of right now, I’ve got 4 people that have sent me their confirmation (6 counting myself and Diane). Today I talked to the guy selling these rods, and he’s still got them, so we’re still in the running (sounds like he may be throwing in a couple other “parts” rods as well-rods that could be either stripped for parts, or turned into bantys). Again, please email me to confirm that you’re interested in this. Once I get 9 confirmations, I’ll set up the escrow account.

 If you still need another PLEASE let me know. Cfisher

Right now, I’ve got 9 people, counting myself; MNFisher, Phil Hooks, GBurgFisher, Jim Krul, Harry Boyd, DianeID, Doc Cohen, Ed Rauch. So, Cfisher, email me with your onfirmation, and there’s a spot open for you. I need at LEAST 10, if I get more, that just means that we each pay less (for fewer rods).

Alright! I’ve got 8 confirmations so far: MNFisher, Phil Hooks, GBurgFisher, Jim Krul (x2?), Harry Boyd, DianeID, Ed Rauch. I only need 1 more person to bring to total to 10 (counting myself). If I get that last confirmation by tonight or early tomorrow (by 9am), I’ll set up the account tomorrow.

Yes!!! Just got my 9th confirmation! Here’s the list of “the 10”:
myself (Photojoe4)
MNFisher
Phil Hooks
GBurgFisher
Jim Krul x 2
Harry Boyd
DianeID
Ed Rauch
Bob (bamboo1963)

If I’ve made any errors/omissions, please email/call me asap. Tomorrow I’ll go set up the escrow account. Total due from each person is $300 (includes shipping)-$280 for myself (no shipping). I’m estimating that shipping will be no more than $20 (insured).

Wow! This is the neatest concept. Great idea. I hope it works out that
it exceeds everyones expectations.G Good luck to all. Warm regards,
Jim

Arrrggghhh, why did I have to spend all my free cash, ($150) on vacation?
Hey if anyone gets a project rod they want to get rid of I may be interested, I’d be interested in a completed one to, but already know I can’t afford one.

Thanks Jim, I think it’s going to work out quite nicely, even for those that aren’t one of the 10.

Swen, my plan is to sell off 3-4 of my rods right off the bat to recoup my expenses. I imagine several others might do the same (though I can’t speak directly for them). So, there are going to be a number of bamboo rods showing up here in the near future.

Just a “bump”.

Well, I spent 4(!!!) hours going through every single one of the rods today (along with my fishing buddy Clyde), and I have good news and bad news about them. The bad news is, there are more ?no name/misc? than I had thought there were. There are 41 ?brand name? rods (Montague, South Bend, HI), and the rest are no name/misc (there are 2 Shakespears, a couple Montgomery Wards, a JC Higgins, and what I think is an LL Bean, all of which I am counting as ?no names/misc?). There were a few Heddons in the lot when I originally looked at it, but since then, this guy told me that he has sold off a few of the rods (the Heddons). The good news is, in order to make up for the rods he sold, he is including 4 refinished rods (3 appear to be ?banty? rods, as they are all under 6? long). Below is the list of all of the rods. If anyone is wanting out after finding out about this, I COMPLETELY understand, please let me know in the next 24 hours and I?ll refund everyones money and call this thing off. I?d estimate that each of the production rods has a value of about $80-100, so at the very least, with everyone getting at least 4 of them apiece, you?ll be getting $320 worth of rods, just with them. But, again, if anyone is wanting out at this point, I TOTALLY and COMPLETELY understand (but, again, please let me know within 24hrs, as I do have 1 other ?backup? person that may be interested).

Also, there are a few spinning rods and what looks like an old wooden English salmon rod (with wooden ferrules and ?form? case) that I?ll include in one of the 10 piles. Again, I?ll do my very best to separate these into 10 ?equal? piles (but I?m not taking any requests-just ain?t gonna happen!)

Joe as a party that has no money in this pot let me say you are doing a great job!
And folks IMO Joe shoud not have to eat one penny on this deal…he didn’t say if there is a irrevocable commitment to buy from this guy…

Any way he has acted in your behalf in this and I think you are all committed…just an outsider’s opinion …

Actually I think this will work out well…I have zero interest in bamboo rods or probably would have been in there with you.

Just my 2 cents. I was with Joe, and he is a little stressed in a good way. He is agonizing over this and trying to come up with a plan to make it fair. Some of the no names could be real treasures, were just not sure enough to make the call. I will say that what you recieve you should be able to easily recoup your investments. Id a 1/4 or better you could line up and fish. I agree with duckster. You have comitted and I dont think youll be disappointed. Again my 2 cents, Clyde

Hi Diane,

I can certainly understand your consternation. But there are those
among us that really enjoy a little banty.G I have used several that
were very pleasant to fish. I am currently rebuilding a banty from a
Granger mid section with two tips, all arrow straight and sound. Its light
in hand and an absolute joy to cast.G That said, I can understand
that a banty is not what the gent had represented and probably not all
rods will perform well in that configuration. But for this old guy, 6 foot
of cane is plenty. I can yank bluegills all day without tiring.G Warm
regards, Jim

Thanks, Diane. Yes, it was pretty crappy of this guy to sell off some of the rods, but in his defense, this really isn’t the way he wanted to sell this lot of rods. He wanted just 1 person to buy up the lot from him, not 10 people. He had several offers for the lot since I talked to him a couple weeks ago, but he turned them down so I’d have a chance at getting my 10 people together to purchase these rods. He sold a few rods, but tried to make up for it as best he could. Sadly, I’ve had 2 people bow out so far. Even worse, I had 1 person re-affirm his committment. I’m sorry to those involved, but it looks like this just can’t happen now (I have 1 replacement, but not 2). I’ll wait to call this officially “over” until later tomorrow, in the off chance that someone else is interested, or if I can somehow talk the guy into lowering the price. :frowning:

Joe Martin

Oh, and also, this lot of rods is still worth what the guy is asking, even without the ones he’s sold. It comes out to $28/rod, which is more than a fair price for even the “no name/misc” rods, and certainly a fair price for the “production” rods (even those needing minor repairs).

Joe Martin
