Hobie Mirage outback, should I or not?

I am about to pull the trigger on a hobie mirage outback. I live in Jackson, MS, and up to now my fly fishing has been exclusively for Arkansas trout. I live right by a reservoir, and figured why not fish at home too. I would be buying the outback for lake fishing. I am a big guy pushing 280, but I look like I am 279. I would potentially take the outback to Arkansas, but the primary use would be at home. It is a lot of money, and I would like some opinions.

I love the Outback. The pros are that it is a quick kayak when using the Mirage Drive, not to mention the whole “hands free” fishing aspect. There seems to be plenty of room for my gear. Its very stable. With the included wheeled cart, it is very easy to get to/from the water. My kids love “taking it out for a spin” too.

The only cons I can think of are that it IS a heavier kayak at around 70 lbs +/-, there really isn’t much of a flat floor for standing to sight-fish (not a concern if you don’t plan to stand in the kayak).

I also think the Outback would be a good choice. Although my kayak is a Revolution I can vouch for the hands free fishing. My fly spends more time in the water and less waiting around till I can get around to casting. I think you’ll love the Outback.

I found a guy selling an outback (3 years old used 5 times and looks brand new), a sport and a trailer for less then $3k. My wife had no interest in a kayak until she saw the pedal drive, and she wants in, so I think I am going to make the purchase.

You might what to also check out the Native Ultimate line with the propel system. These kayaks are made to stand up in to fish but also have the most comfortable seat in the industry. Just a quick on-line check shows they have a $2400 msrp price tag but there are better deals out there. Just another option.

Just my not so humble opinion but a Native Ultimate is so far removed from being considered a “kayak” it is laughable. Face it … they are AT BEST a “catamaran canoe”.
