Will be in the Sangre de Christo mountains of Colorado this month - In the vicinity of Westcliffe, and am looking for high alpine lake fishing opportunities in the area. I have fished Lily Lake on the Blanca Peak Massif, with both incredible and miserable results, as well as the South Colony lakes near Crestone Peaks, with quite good luck.
I know there is a glut of lakes in the area, but am looking to find the ones that are worth throwing a line into before taking on the 4wd roads and subsequent hikes required to get to them. Any suggestions on locales and techniques would be much appreciated…
The 2 Brush Creek Lakes are maybe my favorite place on earth. With Eagle peak rising in the back ground it is truly beautiful. It has been nearly 20 years since I have been up there, but the fishing was great back then!
I read in the paper that they are having fires there again this summer so be careful out there.
Thanks Ed. You’re right - The whole Sangre de Christo range is one of the most beautiful places on Earth. You should give Blanca Peak and the Huerfano valley a go sometime.
I’m surprised they are having trouble with fires. I thought they had received a ton of rain this spring - it’s too bad.
