Had the most incredible results on a BLUE and snipe spider last week! Built like the P&O or the S&P, using blue floss and a snipe collar! Absolutely incredible!
Gotta do further checking on the availability (re overseas shipping) of some other birds!
Trouts don’t live in ugly places

Diane,
We were fishing trout streams, spring fed, in the southern Missouri Ozark region. Nice sized trouts smacking 'em! I really get a kick out of using flies that are not popular in an area…trouts don’t know them, and they are curious enough to try them out!
Hope they work as well up in the Black Hills!
Betty
DrRob,
Thank you for your more than generous offer!!
You tiers in the UK have far more skins available to you than we have here. I’ll start looking up skins!
Again thank you!
Betty
Betty,
Great! Great!
I have some snipe wings. I got them from a board member, (Snipe Hunter) I’ve sent him some bass flies but owe him a lot more.
I’ll send you a pair (Wilson’s snipe) if you will E mail me your address. I’m going to tie some more bass flies for him and can use some help. I’ve heard that you are an excellent tier.
The european snipe is the same as ours. (already checked it out with Hans W.)
Sometimes the Northcountry Spiders are the best things going. I’ve found a use for just about all colors combined with snipe, and other soft hackles. S&P seems to work on more occasions than any other for me but P and olive is very good around here too.
I ran out of silk and tied with rayon floss last year. It seems to work ok.
I have been using contrasting color tying thread, and using the tag end to counter-wrap the body. Primrose on any number of colors gives a tiny segmented effect and keeps the body intact a little longer. (We have brookies that are death on floss).
Regards,
Bill
P.S. Afew years back I had some days like you describe.
Fall Fishing
When you want to have some fun,
Snipe and Purple…thats the one!
Isn’t that a kewl website?!? DrRob’s flies are absolutely beautiful!
The Sylvester Nemes books are available here (US), and I was able to get John Reid’s Clyde Style Flies from theCoch-y-Bonddu Book shop Machynllenth, Powys, UK. Some of the other reference books DrRob listed sound great!
However I think that snipe is illegal to own in US unless you shoot it yourself, maybe wrong about that but I think there was a good article in Fly tyer recently about the legality of some of these types of feathers and its rather complicated i seem to remember.
Migratory bird act etc
I’ve always used starling for my snipe and purple. It’s supposed to be very close to snipe in size and color. Looks like I’ll need to sharpen up my marksmanship!
David p and Jim slatterly…
EEEEOOOWWW!!! Does this mean that I’m going to jail? I checked last year and could not find any laws regarding ownership of snipe skins or wings. I also checked with the P.O. Dept as regards the shipping. All I can remember right now is that it is ok as long as they were taken legally from the state they came from.
The first real snipe feathers I obtained were bought at the Sommerset show a number of years ago. I don’t think that a feather merchant would risk fines if it were not legal. But…HELP you Philladelphia Lawyers!
