In a nice warm cabin all by myself with no interruptions at 9000 ft in the Colorado Rockies. Snow is gently falling. The peace and solitude is just what I needed. I bring the stuff along to tie flies for a swap and have tied a dozen Royal Coachman Dries and no two of them look anything alike. They barely look like Royal Coachmen.
Nope, no fishing. The lake is frozen over and I don’t ice fish.
I live about 1.5 hours away. I come up here about once a month all year round. When I go out after breakfast, I am going to take pictures of the lake for a report on how the lake is refilling. The Camp Ranger and I may go out on the ice to see if we can determine just how the lake is refilling.
We know where the water is coming from, but we don’t know if the ice pack is stuck to the lake bed or floating on the new water. Stuck to the lake bed would be very bad for fishing this spring. The water has been flowing around the edges of the ice. We need to see how thick the ice is so we know if there is anyplace for the fish or if it is frozen clean through.
Betty, that just shows what a Real Man ™ Kevin is. He isn’t the sort of bully to go out and kick something smaller than himself. Nope, he’ll only take out his frustrations on something that can reply in kind, or reply in unkind, or… You know what I mean.
It’s either that, or Kevin has developed some darned-near-terminal shack nasties. Judging by his description of his fly tying, I’m worried about the latter. <psst>(Why don’t you tell him to head south for a weekend and catch some fish?)
Thank you, Ed. It’s good to know that someone has my back.
Betty, I have a wife, an ex-wife, 6 daughters and a gaggle of granddaughters. There ain’t a creature alive that scares me anymore.
We have resident moose up here. There must be a bull somewhere because there is a cow that stays in and around the camp that always seems to have a calf. Not much fear of people, either as she will walk by a bunch of Scouters that are swapping stories within 30 ft. The elk are a little more stand offish. The rock squirrels will steal food off your plate while you are holding it. The bears are asleep, but I have seen them and even fished the lake with them. They were on one side and I was on the other.
I just got back off the ice and am going to post a fishing report on the progress of the lake refilling.
