I usually try to get out somewhere at least once a week during winter and more often as it warms up.
Just last Saturday, the 31st of January my son Mike, his friend Ryan and I traveled north about 40 minutes to fish the Vernon Bridge stretch of the Henry’s Fork. Had to walk in from the road, but it’s only about a block and a half. About 24" of snow, but it was soft and I had my trusty wading staff.
Temps were at 24 degrees for the air and 36 degrees for the water with a slight breeze.
We started with a double nymph rig and dropped a San Juan Worm off the end and it was truly the bug du jour! In three hours, besides freezing, and ice in the guides - serious ice in the guides - we were able to hook over twenty fish between us and two standout fish were landed, along with quite a few more. We lost some great fish, but that didn’t dampen our spirits at the bite being on and strong! One bow landed by me at spot-on 20" and another by my son at 22".
Anyway, just thought I’d pass along some of our winter fun.

Hey John, can you believe it? The worm was the trick and just about every fish we caught was on that fly. I did have to drop in to Jimmy’s today to give Staples a hard time and he just screwed up his face and gave me one of those looks and then said that if he goes soon he just might have to take a bunch of “worms”! I was witness to it, as God is my witness I heard it from his own lips!
Saying it and doing it are two different things. Bruce might take some with him, but attaching one to a tippet and putting it in the water is another matter !!
