I recently purchased a new Apex Vice made by Anvil USA. It was used in the store display but not a demo. Problem is it when I got home there was no paperwork with the vice. I think I’ve figured out how to adjust the jaws for different hook sizes but would like to be sure. Can anyone scan and post a copy of the use and care instructions on this vice, or copy and snail mail me a copy. I called the store and they couldn’t find it and have e-mailed Anvil but haven’t heard from them yet.
Tom;
I’ve tied on an Anvil Apex for years and no longer have the paper work, (if there ever WAS any, to tell the truth!?), but the “hook adjustment”, (unless they’ve changed a great deal and they don’t appear to have), is merely done by;
"Opening the cam lever fully, (until it moves freely), and then rotating the knurled knob, behind the main vice body, clockwise, or, counter clockwise, until the point of the jaws are open twice the width of the hook wire you’re adjusting for.
Check this setting, by inserting the hook and closing the cam lever, tightly, until the handle is pointing straight down, or, parallel with the vise’s main shaft.
If, when the hook is inserted and the cam is closed… the cam lever only closes to a 45degree angle or, less, you run the risk of the jaws popping open when pressure’s applied to the fly, during tying.
The two grooves located in the jaws, are for large diameter hook wires, of course, and the same “rule” of the cam lever, being parallel to the main shaft still applies.
That’s “about it” when it comes to this vise!! If you have any problems, contact Anvil, or if I can, I’ll be more than happy to answer any questions I can too!
It’s a very good little vise, for the buck, I hope you enjoy it!
Flybinder is correct. I have the Anvil vise. but I don’t remember any instructions ever coming with it. It is very simple to use, holds hooks extremely well. I only use it now to crush barbs as I have upgraded to a rotary, which I like way better.
I have the vice also. I love the thing, Head sleeve recently cracked and I sent them a e-mail and they just said I have to pay shipping one way and they would have the new part back to me in a week or less. Nice Service…One day i will send it in…lol dont fix what ain’t broke, compltely.
I also love my anvil vice. I didn’t receive any paperwork with mine either, but the method described above effective for me as well.
I ussually keep my nose out of what kind of vice to buy threads… kinda like talking politics or religion, but… when I buy a new vice it will be Apex’s new rotary.
