Help with heavy flies on longer casts,,, please?

Hello everyone,

I took the plunge, so here goes, my first question:

I seem to get a lot of knots in my cast when I throw heavy flies on a longer cast, like for white bass with a clowser minnow.

I think I may be breaking my wrist in my backcast some. Would it help me to sway my hips? I see guys like Steve Rajeff swaying there hips a lot, not that I am like Steve Rajeff!!! Hahahaah.

Thanks!

Ha ha, good one J Castwell. I never listen to my Ipod while fishing and I hate rap music, though. When I lived out west I got to be a big country and western fan though. Also, I liked your Au Sable piece, sir, you really tell it right. I wish I could cast heavy flies like that but I guesss, practice practice pratice!!!

What size leaders are you using? If there too light you wont get the proper turn-over. Watch for tailing loops as well, those will make a mess out of your leader.

Pete; Slow your casting action way down and open the loop slightly. Wait for the back cast to straighten. Push Pull with no Jerks, in fact if you leave the Jerk at home you will have a good day on the water. Slow and elegant should smooth things out some. Have Fun. Jax

Getting Old has it’s advantages. It slows you down just enough to get your timing for tightening into a trout Just Right.

Welcome, Pete.

If you’re looking to catch a lady, go ahead and do the hip-swing thing, and don’t worry about the knots. When you take breaks to untangle the knots, that’ll give the lady a chance to approach, and perhaps offer to help.

You might not be waiting long enough before starting your next cast. WIth a heavy fly you can feel the line put the bend in the rod, then a second bump which is the clouser fully extending. If you don’t feel that, you might be casting too soon.

You can also use an oval cast. We like to keep are weight(eyes) to 1/60 of an oz or less. However you cast do it smoothly and slow down your timing.

I find with big flies, If I don’t cast over the same plain(spelling/use) I get no knots. I pull back over to the side slightly and push forward in a more upright postion.

If that all makes sense, Great,

The leader and fly line that you use can make a big difference with heavier flies. I like to use a heavier, stiffer leader for big, heavy flies. A fly line can make a huge difference in casting heavier flies, too. RIO’s Clouser fly line is great for big, heavy flies.
