Help Needed with Tip Top Replacement

Hi All,

I have a Sage 389 LL that I really like, but the tip top is not in great shape. I bought it used, and it has been fished a lot, as the previous owner lived in the mountains and obviously liked to fish it a lot too. The top is usable, but the rod would be better with a new top.

I do not want to damage the rod in any way in getting the old top off. What is the best and safest way? Will boiling water be enough to soften the glue enough to get the top off?

Thanks and regards,

Gandolf

You have to measure the diameter in 64ths and get a replacement - that’s the diameter of the rod tip, then it should be easy to get off - I put mine on with 5 minute epoxy and it comes off very easily with a hair dryer.

Heat lightly and keep pulling. If you don’t want to burn your fingers, put a paper clip in it,put a rubber band on the bottom and stretch the band while heating it up. A little lighter held a few inches away and only for a few seconds usually does the trick. Randy

i would heat it gently with a soldering iron until the adhesive softens. have someone keep tugging the tip top held with a needle nose pliers
