Have You Ever?

Have you ever forgotten what size hooks you needed when you were at the shop so you ended up ‘overstocking’ (like THAT’s possible) on one size?

I need size 10 and 14, but I have 6 boxes of size 12. (evenly divided wet and dry)

Man, I need to carry a list or something.

Don,

I have been there and done that way too many times! Now I keep a little notebook at my fly tying area and as I see that I am getting low on a hook or any material, I write down the description and size in the notebook. When I know I am going to a fly shop or am placing an order over the internet, I grab that notebook and only order/purchase what is listed as needing replenished. After that, I can look at other items they may have that I really do not need, but, think I have to have!

Don,

Look at it this way.

You are keeping the fly shop open.

You can donate the spare hooks to a club or organization as part of their fund raiser and make someone else happy.

Can you ever really have too much of any one item?

Happy tying.

Larry

Don,
Post It Notes, Post It Notes, Post It Notes!!!
Doug

Don,

Happens all the time to me.

And I do take ‘notes’, I just forget the dang things when I get near the shop…

Luckily, you can never have too many fly tying hooks.

Besides, forgeting to the the correct size means you have a reason for the next trip…

Buddy

Then you forget and leave the post-it note stuck to the desk.

Done it many times.

I carry a cheap bound notebook (bought at walmart) in my rear left pocket. I keep lists and phone numbers etc scribbled in it, works great untill I wash the stupid thing then I have to go through and peel each page apart and write the important stuff in the next one.

Eric

I carry a Blackberry, and jot notes in it when needed. Since it’s always with me, I have my shopping list at all times. I believe most cell phones now have the capability of jotting a note to yourself. Read your manual if unsure.

Joe

I find that my inspiration comes in church. That is why you see me with a PDA. If I think if fly fishing or tying, I go grab the PDA and jot down what I need (mostly the WANTS come to mind)!

I just thought if an organization that accepts charitable donations… SKershaw fly tying fund. It furthers the mission of keeping Scott out of his wife’s hair!

Idea that we talked about on Saturday… let’s do a material swap and the first stop for the box can be at my house;)

Remind me to put a Dremel on the PDA list!

Oh yeah, the list never works… it gets TOO long for me. If I get everything she would make me come home with a dog-house to sleep in for a week!

Eric;

I resemble that remark right there! If I kept it in a pocket, it’d get washed. If I keep it on the desk, I would never have it at the store. (My local shop is Cabelas, so I don’t always plan a trip. It is 5 minutes from work. BAD placement!)

I was going to post something but I forgot what this thread was about.

In my opinion that is great placement! How do you think we picked where to live?!!!

A good friend of mine here owns a Photo Studio. Everytime I would go into his shop I always noticed a piece of paper clipped to his tie or shirt with a clothes pin. One day I asked him what it was for and he said it was his “things to do, things to order” memo. When a customer needed him to order something he would jot it down on that piece of paper and put it back under the clothes pin. At the end of the day he would take that piece of paper and take care of whatever notes were on it and replace it with another blank piece of paper for the next day. Always worked for him!!

Hi,

I don’t know how anyone overstocks anything. Yes I have forgoten many times what I’ve needed. I guess its because I’m getting old but at those times I just roam the fly fishing section of the tackle store until I remember or I simply go home empty handed. I don’t buy just on the assumption I need something, possibly this size hook, this colour cape or the other. I buy what I need when I need it. I never have too much of anything which can be a shortfall I suppose to some but not yet to me but everyone is different

Cheers

I took some advice and used the note option in my phone. Gee, you’d think someone in IT for 15 years woulda thought of that himself.

Guess I never got past the bricking of my iPaq. :frowning:

Gonna hit Cabelas over lunch today and rectify the situation.

I am jealous. Working across the street from the big C and spending your lunch hour there! What a terrible life  I do think a trip to Cabela’s is in order. Last night the water was so muddy at our pond that I only got one bite and no hook-ups… maybe I need to buy more stuff to manipulate the fish into biting. Hope the water clears soon and the fish go into “a years supply” mode!

Hmm, yesterday I was at the walking bridge and I caught some Gills that bent my 3wt so the tip was trying to touch the butt. Man, those were a kick! (If you wanna know, they were taking a bead-head dog’s-butt fly  )

As for having Cabelas so close, I need to get e job there to get the discount AND pay for the trips!

Holy moly, that would have been fun! I got skunked hard core! What in the sam hell is a dog’s butt fly? Sound like a goof up at the tying table. I would like to see this! If you don’t mind, I would like to see this fly tomorrow.

You know, my job at Baker’s isn’t all that great. Maybe Cabela’s needs some night help! I think I will look on the website or careerlink.org.

Good thought!

Warren, I don’t get the part about “stuff you don’t really need” you were talking about fly stuff, right?
For fishing, right ?..You need it. And, Joe, here in Oregon we eat blackberries, on ice cream,
( in season )…Dan

I tend to buy hooks in fairly alrge quantkties and then tie flies on them when I want to tie.
I just picked up 3000 hooks for about $60.00.
I have a hard time passing the size 8 and 10 aberdeen hooks that go on sale at some of the large disocunt stores at times.

As my wife says she can never have to much yarn, I can never have to many things to tie flies on.
