I got up this morning with the idea of calling St Croix about buying a spare rod tip for my 764-4 legend ultra.Man told me with my model I would need to send the rod in to see if they could make one.I then asked if it would break could it be repaired. To my bad surprise he said it would likely be replaced with a imperial!I said a imperial! Built in mexico, minus IPC and ART and minus a SIC stripper and tic single foot guides and REC reel seat
Yea a real even exchange that would be $310 retail verses $180.00 retail.
I imagine, you do know that St Croix no longer makes the Legend Ultra. So them replacing it with an Imperial, which is not made in Mexico, but is made in Park Falls, seems to me a fair compromise. Which by-the-way, is a fine fly rod. Of course you could always take advantage of their trade-up program and replace it with a Legend Elite.
I do know that they do have some LU replacement tips for sale on their website. They are for Model Numbers beginning with only the letter U and those beginning with the letters UFT. Y

Thomas, I agree with you. I most certainly do not see the Imperial being a even replacement for the Legend. I also feel the manufacturers are watering down their warranties right along with ‘cheapening’ the model line ups. St. Croix’s notion of a handle being a bulbous rubber skinned sex toy leaves me abandoning them from my list of choices. Almost as bad as Redington’s new bright red grips or the ever noxious Sage “Bass” rods in baby puke green with red reel seats! Its sad to see the fly equipment manufacturer’s taking up the Shimano/Pure Fishing code of profit over quality. Peppered with a good dose of exaggerated marketing to disguise all that empty technology for technologies sake.
Interesting story about this at http://www.fieldandstream.com/blogs/flytalk/2013/09/rethinking-fly-rod-warranties. Sounds like we’ll have a choice between even higher rod prices and sorrier rod warranties in the future.
I did get some good news today, called back and asked for Ken ext-115,I have dealt with him on blanks before and he informed me they had 14 legend ultras in a 764-4 for sale, you know I told him to send one, might should have said two!
I had a great experience with Temple Forks Outfitters. I had a switch rod for about 5 years that has had alot of use. Recently, the reel seat became loose. I sent it to them and it appears that they sent a a new rod, all in 1 week. If it isn’t new, they certainly refurbished the old one to look new. I can’t say enough about their customer service.
Glad to hear things worked out. St Croix is a fine company.
