Dear Oldman,
Hand tied leaders for what?
I’m not trying to be smart, but you may need to get a bit more specific to generate the answers you are seeking.
Dry fly leaders are different from streamer leaders are different from bass leaders are different from nymphing leaders, atleast if you listen to some folks.
Me, I don’t know any better so I stick to generally approved method of leader building and make most of my leaders with 1/3 of the length being the “butt” section, 1/3 of the length being the taper section, and 1/3 or the length being the tippet section.
I use Maxima Chameleon exclusively for the first 2/3’s of all my leaders and often for the final 1/3 as well. On other leaders I use Orvis SS, or Umpqua, or Dia-Riki for the tippet section if I want a limper leader.
Try to match the first section of the butt to the diameter of your fly line. Ex. .022 butt doesn’t work especially well with a 2 weight fly line, with a 2 weight you might start out with a .019, or . 017 butt section.
In the larger diameters over .010 there isn’t a problem with dropping .002, or on occasion .003 in diameter when going to the next smaller section. Once I hit the .010 mark, I like to stick with .001 diameter drops if at all possible.
Fiddle around with a couple leaders and I’ll bet you can make some nice ones from scratch.

Tim Murphy
