Hackling Question for soft hackles

Pin to a fragmentation grenade? Claymore Mine?

I like the smallish English style pliers witht eh rounded, not sqaured off tips…just like the ones used in the video clip referenced on the previous page. I too, tye in by the shaft, and fold the hackle barbs back prior to making turns. Also, if using a wire rib in your patterns: Be careful to note where the end of the wire is; if not covered well with thread, it will often cut into your feather or your tying thread!

Another thing to try with the english-type pliers is to dip one side in “softex” to give it a little grip.

I surely agree with the guys about using the small electronic clips BUT there is a warning,
Once ib a while you’ll run across a sample where in its manufacture there will be s sharp edge on the little metal hook from when it was stamped from the bigger sheet of metal. You will notice this immediately and should just junk that one.

Thats how I have been doing it for 30 years. Reinforced hackle and a neat, tiny head. The hallmark of a good Soft hackle.
