After nearly 4 years of no rod building (not to mention almost 2 years of no fly tying), I’m going to build up a couple glass rods! At least I’m going to give it the old college try. They’re a vintage Diamond glass, and a beautiful blue in color. 7’6" 4 wt. Wish me, and my shaky hands, luck!
go for it ,betty !!!
Bet they’ll be beautiful and work great on those chubs!
OK … got all the parts! Nifty guides. Jade stripper guide. Threads. Gorgeous reel seat. Cigar, 6" cork. All sitting there looking at me every time I enter the room. So why am I so nervous about starting it??? Somebody give me a good kick in the tuchus!!
Sending tuchus kick! I felt the same way with my last build, then put the stripping guides on backwards, then sold all the rodbuilding stuff. Haven’t regretted it yet, but might. Hope the enthusiasm comes back for you.
How funny! My enthusiasm has always been there, but due to medical issues, the ability hasn’t. Now that those “issues” are hopefully under control, I’m afraid! It’s like the first time all over again!
Thank you for the kick! That may be all that is needed. Love this FAOL family.
If the Queen doesn’t do It, why should the rest of us?

If the knowledge and experience are still there it won’t take long for the hands to re-learn their part. You know that the most important part of doing good work is in your head. If you’ve forgotten something you can still get answers here. I expect the best first rod ever posted here from you!
Thank you. I will do it! I CAN do it!
New epoxy has arrived … last road block to completion … other than the mental one!! ![]()
Which kind did you get? I got some single part “rod dancer” that I was looking forward to using, but never got around to it. Sure would be convenient.
Betty, those blanks make great fly rods - hope you enjoy building them. Think of it as great therapy.
Tim
Herefishy … on my third or fourth trip to the building table, I finally remembered what I went after once I got there!! The epoxy I use is the standard Flex Coat - light. My pharmacy gives me syringes (no needles) to exactly measure the liquids. (Lawrdy … after all the business I take his way, he should!). Would rather a couple light coats than the globby football of the thick coat.
Betty,
Just make sure there is no silicone in those syringes. If there is, you will get lots of fisheye spots in the epoxy. I would do a test on a scrap piece to make sure before you apply any to your rod.
Ted
Nope. No silicone. Have used these syringes for the past 10 years, and they’re wonderful! If I ever switch brands, or pharmacies, I will certainly check that out first! I used them to draw the liquids out of the bottles (CAREFULLY marked), and “shot” into the mixing cup. Stir gently, stopping to breath into the cup periodically, and, VOILA!, perfect do! Another rather unorthodox thing I do is apply the epoxy with the end of a knitting needle! Smooth as glass, no bubbles!
Thank you Ted!
Betty, your post has me inspired to finish my first attempt at rod building. I think I’m gonna do it!
I did your knitting needle system the last couple of builds and really liked it. Just finished using my single part Rod Dancer to mend my glasses with. Hope it’s strong!
Good for you Betty! Not to ruffle the feathers, but if you don’t have pictures of the finished build then it didn’t happen. ![]()
Kidding aside, I’m glad you’re doing what you love.
Hugs!
Oh, OK! I’ll post pictures when I finish. (Here’s a funny for you! Right now, when I typed “finish” in that last sentence … spell check changed it to “fish”! How’z that! Even spellcheck is picking on me!!
). Hugs back at you!!
Jeez Betty,
Ain’t procrastination a wonderful thing!
We still have our favorite 5wt leaning in the corner with a broken tip section. Been there for about a year now. Haven’t even ordered the section yet. Bet yours gets done first! That little glass rod sounds so sweet.
BEST to ya Betty…

No kicks, just a gentle pat on the shoulder 'cause I’m sure that you will do a fine job. ![]()
