i am extreamly new to fly tying. I am looking for a nice and easy grasshopper pattern. Any help? :?
Do a search on this web site. Should be some good ones here!
I personally like this one: http://www.flyanglersonline.com/flytyin … 5fotw.html
There are 10 different ‘hopper’ patterns in the fly archives on this site alone. Pick one you like that you tie well and go get em!!

I tie a pattern that is similar to the Nobby Hopper on this site. Difference is I use yellow yarn instead of chenille. Twist yarn at the hook bend to give hopper a butt, then rewrap yarn forward. Also just use one piece of turkey wing folded in half long ways and all deer hair, not any golden pheasant. Not suggesting this is any better, just different.
I really like Charlie Craven’s Charlie Boy Hopper. YOu should be able to find it here. http://www.charliesflyboxinc.com/flybox/detail.cfm
It is relatively easy to tie, albeit with a lot of steps. Two things I’ll add to his instructions. Be sure to use a double blade razor for the cut. A single blade razorisn’t sharp enough. And, when you are gluing the tail section together, intentionally build a bit of an uptilt to the tail as the glue dries.
A couple of weeks ago I tied on one of these that I had made, meaning it was far from a perfect tie. A dozen rainbows impaled themselfve in this fly in the fnxt couple of hours. they weren’t rising otherwise, but cam up through about 3 feet of strong current water to grab ths fly. Amazingly, after this wear and tear, the fly looked as good as new.
Here is an oldie but goody, with no spun deer hair or knotted legs.
I picked up some nice Browns on the Bighole a short time ago using a Foam Hopper made up as follows: size 10 hook, yellow thread, yellow round cell foam (slit lengthwise to cover hook shank), small clump of yellow deer hair (tied on so tips extend back beyond bend of hook), yellow rubber legs tied on the sides. Takes about a minute (or less) to tie but pretty effective.
Here is [url=http://flyanglersonline.com/flytying/intermediate/part30.html:639d1]Al’s Hopper[/url:639d1] From the intermediate fly tying section.
It comes complete with instructions
Google up the Letort Hopper.Very simple pattern that uses a minimum of materials and works as well as any of them.
Here is the recipe for a very simple hopper pattern that I like to tie.
Bullet Head Hopper
Hook: Mustad 94831 #6
Thread: UTC 140 Chart.
Body: Yellow Deer Hair.
Wing: Turkey Tail Quill
Head: Light Elk Hair
Legs: Chart. Round Rubber
I hope this will be of some help. I can email you a pic of it if you would like. John
The Madam X is a good one too. First “hopper” pattern I tied. Though I’ve been told its also a stone fly immitator?
Here is my all time favorite hopper pattern. It has been very
successful for me. It is here: http://www.flyanglersonline.com/flytyin … 3fotw.html
It’s not a hard fly to tie, holds up very well and the fish love it.
Warm regards, Jim
Drolfson and Jim Hatch
