Went out to a pond for the first time in a few weeks. Had rained the day before and at night. Did not want to try drive to the pond as it is slightly uphill all the way back.
Probably a very wise choice as even walking in I was getting wet. When I got to the pond I saw that the east third of the pond was covered with a scum of algae.
Headed around to get to the west side and down to where there was no algae covering the water. Started with a Hares ear type fly and got three nice gills.
All of them hit just after the fly hit the water. A few more casts did not get any more fish so I tried the other rod with a Gilly fly on it. Third cast got a bass about a foot long.
Moved up the pond to an area where I would have more room to cast. About 40 feet from the shore there are some 35 to 40 foot tall trees along this shoreline. They really like to eat flies. l Have to keep a tight loop or I catch the trees (a fairly often occurrence).
I changed each of the flies to ones with smaller bead heads on them. Went with flies with 2 mm brass beads. These would go just under the surface but no deeper.
About every fifth cast I would get a crappie. Some were hitting when I was retrieving the fly just under the surface. Others when I was letting the fly drop.
But they were fun to catch. Aso picked up a few more nice bass in this area.
Temperature was almost 80 degrees by now, so I decided to head home and take care of the fish before the real heat hit(96 for the high).
Got the fish filleted, washed off and in the refig before it got real hot. Buried the guts in my compost pile.
Then I went out and washed both of my lines off. Surprising how dirty the water got.
But I had great fun and have some fish to share.
