One of my favorite annual trips is for lake trout hammering outbound smolts. I guess that is redundant… Anyway, the action is after dark and the attacks must be seen to be believed… Using long, articulated smolt patterns with glow in the dark materials must be seen to be believed.
I charge them with a flashlight before each cast and they are vivid enough to see easily in the water. At the take parts of the fly can usually be seen streaking upriver. It is a lot of fun…
It could be incorporated for sure and YES I am a believer and user of the Spirit River UV2. This fly works so well as it is and that is during the day. I don’t do night fishing but hap has me interested.
Speaking of UV2. Strawberry Cherry Bomb Hook: Streamer #4 to #8
Thread: Red
Tail: Red Marabou with two strands Pearl Flashabou
Body: Red Angora Goat blended with UV2 red with a dubbing Loop
Weight optional, I prefer unweighted and let the line put it in the zone
I am really interested in the Strawberry Cherry Bomb and will have to try some here on my local rivers/ponds/lakes.
Since my mind works differently than most humans, the question I would have to experiment with is to determine if this fly is successful due to the combination of UV, the color red and the Glo in the dark material or is it successful due to the color red only or one of the other materials? For some unknown reason, I am thinking the color red is the trigger, but, one would have to experiment to find out. I do know that way back in my tournament bass fishing days, the color red on crankbaits worked great because they found that as the crankbait went deeper, it took on a brownish color which looked more like a crayfish. Sinch you are fishing this closer to the surface, that color change would not come into play.
I think I will experiment with the color red since, in my mind, that is what I think is the “trigger” with this pattern.
Color is definitely the main factor, also shape. As for the SCB I also tied this in Purple using same material. It too did very well. Problem being, I USED the red more. I tied them in Angora only and Angora and UV2…that I can say fishing two rods, the UV2 made a difference. More came to that fly.
I love to experiment and like you I need answers.
As for thee Shameless Hussy, I started of tying this with a red body. Some action, but nothing like the Glow in The Dark. I have NOT tried a UV2 body in this pattern…yet.
I am tying it for trial the SCB using Glow In The dark ad a rib or underbody. I will also try this with the Hussy.
I believe I have found UV works great at some times, especially in low light (deeper or darker water eat up light, too, obviously) but not so much at other times. One fly I tie by the literal hundreds uses UV Ice Dub and it outfishes any pattern I have ever used for dolly varden…
