Just started to work on a Glow Fly again and this is my first new shot. I don’t think it will end here at all so wanted to ask you guys if maybe I should make the glowing part shorter and expose the Krystal flash chenille more that is under the hackle. I also just threw the tail on and have not decided what to use, but probably will not be this.
Skip, that looks like it was coated with a thin coat of Glo-Coat. I believe tackle manufactures came out with that somewhere around twenty years ago. Guys on the tournament circuit were giving it a whirl back then. It’s looking real good.
Nice try, but that is not what it is. I would tell, but I don’t want my competition in my jig business that have been trying to find out for the entire 1 1/2 years. Have had a lot of people try many different things, but no one has done this yet and I don’t know of any one making jigs like mine.
I have actually wanted to share my find, but my competition in jigs keep me from disclosing this one thing.
I just decided to try and convert it over to a fly as i love using this during the day time and they glow very bright. I have never seen any fishing lure that glows as bright as mine. There may be some, but I have not see them. I have even had some jig makers buy my glow jigs and they still can’t come up with what I am doing so for now I really don’t feel comfortable in telling this one thing.
Now back when I was in Military school in the 60’s we some times cheated with our scrub shoes and put Glo-Coat on them, LOL!
No I don’t know where he is now, but there are several others fishing Bassmaters from around he as well. Then Tommy Martin is still here and I think a couple of the Asian guys live here as well. I think at least 2 young guys one being the guy they call Wolverine because he kind of looks like the guy in X-men. Several also from Jasper which is about 35 miles from me.
Cool, but way different than mine and mine I would bet is much brighter than that one. What you see in that pic is well representative of it’s brightness. If it’s off it’s understated.
I am thinking of making it with a lot shorter glow portion and having it near the end of the hook so it looks more like a lightening bug, but brighter. Maybe put it on a shorter hook too.
Hello,
DMC , the maker of needlework cotton has a glow in the dark product: see the page: http://www.dmc-usa.com/majic/pageServer/0n0100001a/en_US/DMC-Products.html and light product, color card .
The reference is E940, plus there are 2 fluorescent cottons, yellow and chartreuse which I use to make streamers head.
These cottons are widely availables in the USA, see the store locator on the web site.
Here is a pic of 3 different colors of my jigs to to show what they look like glowing. Again much brighter then other materials and the after glow is much longer.
3 Other colors I don’t make as many of…
I used glow chenille for the bodies. They don’t glow as much as the newer glow media, but they do glow. I have 5 colors: yellow, green, orange, white, and pink. I’ve been wanting to pick up some of the newer paint or powder, too as well as some foam or beads to play with. They make yarn, too.
Lets just say I don’t buy what I use as is. I don’t make any chemicals though. You can not buy what I use as I use it and that is about all I will say.
Hello,
Skip is entitled to keep his process secret, but there are a lot to be learn from:http://glowinc.com/ Paint, powders… and technical information are available.
For a non messy material for tying Glo flies, look up or ask your fly shop guy to get you some “Aroura Skirt” The thin strips make a neat body when wrapped round the hook shank with a slight overlap on each turn. Glow Flies are used a lot here in the North Island of New Zealand for Night Fishing. Usually a Doll Fly with a glow body. The yellow and Green ties are good fish getters. Use a camera flash to illuminate. Have Fun. Jax
