Wow!!! Can you imagine getting into a mess of those on a 3 wt? I wonder how much they cost; a buddy of mine is about to build a 4-5 acre lake, and, since most existing fishing lakes already have the presence of bluegills, this would be the perfect time to stock the lake with something like this. Unbelievable!!!
Our fish and game stocked some of them in a lake about 50 miles from me. I only get to fish the lake a few times a year and haven’t caught any of them yet. Did talk to a guy that had caught one out in his boat one day while bass fishing. He showed it to me, about 2 3/4 lbs and looked like a dinner plate. What fun they’d be on a 3 or 4 wt.

The Georgia Giant is a hybrid cross that includes the Green Sunfish. The fish in the photo has very probably been fed/over fed a diet of very high protein pellets befor it was caught by that little girl. While these fish have a rapid growth rate and do get very large, they do not breed true and revert back to producing Green Sunfish which is a small variety of sunfish. All that being said, it would be great to have several hundred in the lake I live on, just to spice things up a bit.
p.s. The man that breeds and raises these fish is the same guy that publicized the 1000 lb wild hog killed on his property in south Georgia. It turns out that Hogzilla was actually a cross between a domestic pig and a wild hog that had been feeding for several years on that same super high protein fish food. Great publicity though…
Most of the Bluegill that are released down here in Southern Illinois are HYBRID SUNFISH.
Hybrid sunfish are a cross between a bluegill and green sunfish. The hybrids are 93% male and produce very few offspring, which results in rapid growth.

those “store-bought” fish would not likely be bought and stocked by a state agency due mainly to the above notes (and also reference meadowlark’s thread on his experiment)
I’d love to get into some as well but one would need to find a private pond that had been stocked by the owner, said owner willing to allow you to fish it
This is weird…I also read somewhere that the Georgia Giants produce offspring that are nearly 90% female…just the opposite of what I wrote and read about the Illiois Hybrids that are used.
