Have you been meaning to learn to spin deerhair or tie wonderwings? Maybe you want to try some dremel bugs or clouser minnows. This swap is for you. Looking for twelve people brave enough to set out to learn something new well enough to swap the results. Duplicates of the same technique are fine. This is about geting around to trying something new. Sign up by the end of February with flies due by the end of March. Send toe tags with recipes and FAOL handle along with flies in a crushproof container and return postage on an addressed envelope . I’ve always liked the looks of woven flies but wondered if they were worth the extra effort so that is what I’ll be doing.
I’ve managed to get a fishable fly after spending a lot of time over last few days. This is a size ten for Midwest and Eastern streams:
and this is a size six forWestern streams:
Jim,
I’ll be spinning Deer Hair, probaly a"Marabou Muddler". And of course it will be a “Varient”…Just can’t seem to tie a fly without changing the reciepe.
I cook the same way:mrgreen:
When are the flies due ? Whats the mailing address to where we send the flies ? How many flies each do we tie ? Anyhow, sign me up & ill do some weaved flies . Im gona weave with 3-4 different materials …
Bugman I’ll send you my address in a P.M. So far we have five tyers so you would need to send four flies. Hopefully we will fill this swap and you’ll need 11. I’ll send you my address in a p.m. after sign up closes on the 28th. The flies should reach me before the end of March. I’m looking foreward to seeing that fly. Since I got the basic braid figured out now I had been thinking of a hex nymph as a good choice for a braided body. Bill, I got you down for a muddler (on a #24 hook right:)).
Hey Char, you can do a brassie if you like but I was kind of hoping everyone would take on a new challenge for this swap. If there is something you have been hesitant to try or having trouble getting right this is a tiime to go for it. Bill, the smallest I have done with spun hair is a 16 irresistable. Bluegills love them when bigger flies get ignored. I used caribou hair for them.
O.K. fly gal you’re in. Bugman, caribou is probably the easiest hair to spin. Unfortunnately flies tied with it are not very durable. It doesn’t matter that much to me. I have some hooks that I have cleaned up and re-tied iresistables on several times.
Sign-up ends Monday. This isn’t as hard as you might think. It only took me about eight hours to get a good fly and the hair I pulled out will undoubtably come in handy for tying something.
Well, it appears that there are going to be just seven of us so you will need to send six flies. I will be sending each of you a p.m. with my address. If you haven’t received it by tonight please let me know.
Mocodan"s muddlers arrived today. He has set a high standad to meet in this one. Dan also sent everyone a nice elk hair caddis. Thanks Dan and thanks for the extra flies. I especially like the midge pupa as I have set fishing more midges as one of my goals for this season
