French Partridge impulse buy

Howdy!

Bought a French partidge skin that was too cheap to pass up on Ebay. Only one problem: I, errr… don’t know what to tie with it.
Tried Googling “french partidge fly” and didn’t get far; same with youtube.

Any recipes, photos, or videos would be appreciated!

Hugh

There is the French Partridge Mayfly Where it is wound as the head hackle in front of a palmered hackle. Other than that I can’t think of others. Its not a widely used feather, and isn’t a substitute for the English Partridge. You could use it for the veiling on dabbler style flies.
Cheers,
A.

L’assassine. Great fly!

If you go over to Hans Weilenmanns site and type in French Partridge in the search box there, quite a few patterns come up.

Mark

As others have mentioned, English and Irish Mayfly (what we would call a Green Drake) wet flies often call for it.

The smaller feathers are great for olive soft hackles.

The French Partridge is similar to the Chukar partridge; you might also want to look for patterns using that.

Some excellent advice has been given above.
The wings supply very nice soft hackles of a brown olive colour.
If you de-grease them, they can be coloured with water-proof felt-tip pens.
The wings are very cheap from Cookshill

I agree with your assessment, Donald. I’ve been very interested in the responses everyone has given, and I’m looking forward to tying some of the ideas.
