A few years back a fellow asked me what type of grip I liked. Even though I had wrapped several rods I had never built one from scratch. So I told the guy I had no idea what he was talking about. That led me to get interested in rod building. Some of my first efforts were on Forecast Blanks. I was more than pleasently surprised that such an inexpensive blank could produce a rod that was a real pleasure for me to cast.
With my wife passing I needed something to do to get my head screwed back on so I decided to build another Forecast rod using metallic thread. The colors are Royal Blue and Gold. I think they really go good with blanks color.
Here’s a picture - sorry for the poor camera work.
That looks really nice! That build looks a lot like what I would like to do for each of my boys 1st fly rods. Would it be ok of me to ask where you got that grip?
I got them on Ebay. Here is a link to the seller. Other than being a customer I don’t know the fellow. As you look at the ones for sale please note that the cheaper ones have a reel seat but no grip. The ones I have bought were placed on a 5 wt rod with very little boring necessary.
That looks great! I really like the handle. I made my wife a 5wt on a Batson blank, she LOVES how easy it is to cast. I would give them a thumbs up to anyone wanting to get started building something.
