what animal in minnesota or wisconsin do you get your marabou from. and where is it on the animal.
Maribou usually comes from white turkeys.
I use the natural turkeys here. They are on the grey side. But I have died them with Kool-Aid and vinegar with good results (for me) Can’t get reel bright colors, like you would want for salt flies. But you end up with alot of maribou off one bird
Hi Deon,
Maribou comes from birds, and they have to be large enough for the marabou to usable size. Marabou originally came from the marabou stork, but as mentioned above it comes off of white turkeys, and it is then dyed to the needed color. Likewise wild turkeys also have it, and that I have gotten off of a wild turkey are a dun (gray) color.
Pheasants also have nice marabou, which you find on the body in the area between the legs and in that area generally. The color from the ring neck pheasant is kind of a coachman brown.

Gandolf
The very best marabou comes from owl legs.
Possessing roadkill owls is, alas, a federal offense I think.
thanks again,
if i get a turkey this year i might try tying with it and see how it pans out.
