Fly Tying Desk

I have been looking for a fly tying desk plans for about 6 months now and my search has turned up nothing. I need something that will hold all of my supplies (not alot) and have an area where i can set up my vise. If anybody has plans for a desk that I could use, could you please send it to me. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

I have used a TV stand before. I have a Stanley rolling tool box for all my supplies. I travel allot and this makes it easy. Even has a slide out compartment for hooks and beads.
Then like I said, a TV stand will work as for the tying.

Drew as we dont know the area that you need to put your desk into, or if it needs to be portable etc it is hard to give ideas, I use an cheep computer desk from walmart and plastic shoe tubs, I store the tubs in a bigger plastic tub. it works for me. I have a couple of boards that I stuck some dowell and drilled some holes into to make a thread/bobbin holder this works for me and as I have been tieing in the basement storage room it didnt mater what it looked like. If you dont like FG’s Idea you might look at small roll top desks or desks with a fold up front that the front folds down to write/tie on

Drew;
Joni’s idea is very good. The “Stanley” style tool boxes have been around for awhile, even starting to show up a yard sales and they hold a lot of “Stuff”. I have a small folding “Snack/TV” table that I made a larger top for to hold more “Stuff” when tying. Good thing I have a good vacuum!

Love to see that stand Jack

My first fly tying desk was just a table with rollers that I got from the used furniture store - I was able to move it from place to place easily and not have to put everything away. And now my fly tying desk is only a bigger table, with the plastic chests all around it. But those wooden creations are beautiful.

I can take this anywhere, set it on a picnic table, tailgate, table at home, vice clamps to the door, one inch pine, wifey made it for me years and years ago. Can even sit on it to this day it’s so sturdy. And that’s sayin’ sumthin’ !

Cheers,

i have plans to make this one. a drawer below would be a simple addition

i can email you the plans

There’s a nice looking one on e-***.

Whatever flat surface this is parked next to instantly becomes a fly tying desk.

I have a small tying desk that I found on sale at Cabela’s a couple years ago. It’s little more than a fold-down letter writing desk, but with the bag beside it to keep my stuff organized, It’s more than big enough and fits in the corner of the living room behind the easy chair which makes my wife happy, too.

Absolutely Bluegill222. Same here. I do allot of shows, plus if I am going on any overnighter, I take it. It is just my luck that the “ONE” fly in my box is going tom be the one the fish want and I need to be able to tie more…LOL.
I even have the vise with a suction cup that can stick to my car.

Here is the Stanley:

I will admit, I have ended up with allot more hooks so I did buy this also:

Drew,

If you want to go all out and build a functional desk that will serve you for many years, go with a roll-top.

I built this a few years ago and am happy I did.

Keeps the kids and pets out. No clearing a place on a table, no set-up time, just sit down and start tying. Fast clean-up, just close the door.

I find that I enjoy the time at the desk more and get more done. I can even walk away from a half-tied fly if I must.

I found the free plans here:

Have fun building!

You might get some more ideas from our web site. Kenny Sample joined Conranch Hackle three years ago.
He is a Master Furniture builder with many years of experience. We have a well tooled shop. He builds only Custom Fly tying
pieces of furniture.

Bluegill 22: What type of bag is that ?

Denny: Kenny makes some fine tying furniture! I’m retiring in 4yrs, would make a good retirement gift from me to me.

I am looking for something that will be stationary and go in the corner of a room. I am going to make this myself and am thinking of it as a project. I was thinking of not only using this as a fly tying station but as a writing desk as well. Something like an “L” shape.

I use an old stationary/writing desk with a fold up top and three cabinets under neath to store supplies, yet I do also have quite a bit of things that spill over into Tupperware bins and old shoe boxes. Works pretty handy for me with some limited new space in my new place. Compared to the entire room I had dedicated to fishing.

I like this computer desk which can go in a corner…no plans but maybe you can copy…

heres a bunch of ideas. hope you can find one you like

It’s a hard sided roller duffel that Cabela’s sold a few years ago. Unfortunately, they discontinued it, but any similar sized bag packed full of Plano 3700 series boxes will do the job.

The following may not be what you had in mind–it is more of a basement idea than what you’d want
in a study or guest bedroom. But it works for me (and I am a woodworker too).

My local lumber wholesaler sells scratched solid-core wood veneer doors for 20 bucks each. Get one.
Cut it down to size. Buy two or more plastic drawer towers (usually three drawers high) from Cosco or KMart.
Screw a 2x4 ribbon to the wall at the same height as the plastic drawer towers. Put the door on top, scratched
side down.

Now you have an extra-stout table that costs about 50 bucks–drawers and all. Put a few smaller plastic drawer towers
on top. Mount your vise and a magnifier lamp and away you go.
