OK, I am lost on this one

are you asking about a strecher box

"fly stretcher

Is a fly stretcher nessesary for flourobarbon leaders?"

I will apologize for posting this before posting, but, this was the first thought that came to my mind when I read the question:

No, a fly stretcher is not needed if the leader is “dead”, a body bag will do. If the leader is wounded, then a stretcher would be nice to have!

Sorry, I just could not help myself…

The short answer in no, it is not necessary. If you are using lighter tippets, up to about 25#, it is not even useful. If you are using larger tippets, for big tarpon or billfish, then, yes, it is very useful but not necessary.

I thought the same thing as Warren, lol…I have one but never use it…I personally think its all bogus but I dont target 200lb tarpon…I do target 100lb tarpon though and have NEVER had any issues…one thing is the fluorocarbon is basically straight anyways off the spool…perhaps once you get up to 60-80lb class you might use it…to me its just another thing to get in the way and clutter up the area

Yes I am talking about a stretcher box. I am told I will be using 60lb shock tippet for tarpon. I like the Idea of the flies attached to the class leader but I can’t imagine that I will be changing flies as often as I normally do in freshwater. seams like a little bit of a pain to drag a box like that around. I am told that mono is a problem but my question was for fluorocarbon

I’ve used them but these days prefer to just use a tube or two, such as Rio’s shocks come in to carry a selection of precut shocks. Much less size and clutter and can even carry while wading.

I like that idea Chuck, good one…I also agree with birddog on needing to change flys all the time…that suggest that one is struggling and unconfident…there might be an occasional breakoff due to tippet wear on a big one but most times the fly just comes undone and unharmed…even on my most trying days I never changed more than 3 times
