My local flyshop had a used rod for sale. When I tested it, it made a clicking sound. I checked and tightended all the ferrules, but the sound persist. What is causing the clicking sound?
Most likely it has a small crack in it, check under the ferrules,it will eventually show itself at the worst time possible.

My guess is that clicking sound will eventually be followed by a breaking sound. . .

did you test cast it, or just fake cast or the infamous “wiggle”. I heard the reel seat clicking on one the other day, but it was easy to find
Dear Tyronefly,
It could be a bad or about ready to go bad ferrule. If it’s bamboo you can usually feel the click in a ferrule as well as hear it.
It could also be a loose reel seat which is awfully easy to fix yourself with some epoxy.
If you are interested in the rod check it more carefully.
Best Wishes,

TyroneFly:
IF it is a graphite or fiberglass rod with internal or spigot ferules it is probably a loose male ferrule where it is glued to the inside of the blank. I had the identical problem with one of my rods.
Try wiggling the male portion of the ferrule to see if you can replicate the sound you hear.
If it is a bamboo rod it could be a loose ferrule or a delamination of the bamboo strips which is extremely unlikely.
Hopefully you have recourse to return it or get it repaired.
Guides will sometimes produce a clicking sound when the rod is flexed as in casting or wiggling. However, it is usually a result of poor ferrule fit or loose components.
It doesn’t neccesarily mean the rod is going to break, but I would avoid buying a rod with this pre-existing problem.

Maybe its the dynamite cap…be sure to keep it secure.
TyroneFly,
I had the same problem with a short bamboo rod. I found that the rod itself fit loosly inside the male ferrule. Every time I would cast the rod, forth and back, I heard and felt the click. It was the rod wiggling inside the ferrule. With bamboo it was a quick fix. I just removed the ferrule, drilled a small hole in the center of the rod shaft, and nailed a brad into the hole. With the shaft expanded, I replaced the ferrule and all was good. I now have a 7’, 5 wieght, 3 piece grass rod that casts an effortless 60+ feet. Giggles and Grins abound. Good luck with your stick.

Sometime it is just loose inside the handle. Sometimes it’s just…
broke!
If you can determine the problem and if you are up to fixin’ the problem , you have an advantage in negotiating the price lower (without insulting shop owner of course). Then go fix it and fish it.
God Blesses!

If you can fix it, offer the guy half of the retail price. Probably what he has in it. Then explain that you will be in tomorrow and will offer 49%, 48% the next day etc.
Likely buy yourself a rod… cheap!
I really like you JC!!!

Thank everyone for your responses. I have decided to pass on buying the rod (graphite).
If it was made in the Middle East…pass.
Was that clicking or ticking?
