What fly fishing magazines are considered to be the most informative. I would like to get a subscription or two and would appreciate any favorites or ones to avoid. I live in the north east so I wouldn’t be interested in the ones dealing mostly with western regions. thanks
I’m a rookie. The only three I like are Fly Tyer, Fly Fishing and Tying, and The Drake.
I’d put my money right here and save on the subscriptions. See the Friends of FAOL to the left of the screen? This site offers more information for more species of fish, with tying instructions and rod building information good for the novice and expert alike. Ain’t nothing in print that can touch it, and it changes every week, not every two months. JGW
I’d go along with the “Fly Fishing and Tying Journal”. If Dave Hughes is associated with it, it’ll be good. He’s the editor.
What may be the best fly fly fishing and tying magazine in the world, IMHO, is “Fly Fishing and Fly Tying” from the UK. It provides a different aspect of the art and craft while providing information that’s probably just as useful here in the US as it is on the other side of “the pond”. A bit pricey but when the annual cost is divided by the number of issues, it’s still well worth it - again, IMHO. They also have a web site -

I particularly enjoy the columns of Bob Wyatt and Malcolm Greenhalgh. Others are also excellent.
But if I were restricted to only one publication (Heaven Forbid!) it’d be FAOL.

Name indicates where I fish and for what I fish.
ecks…all of the publications have web sites that will give you some idea of what they offer. Personally…I subscribe to FlyRod&Reel. It just seems to have a good mix whether for practical application which I need…or more dream fodder which I don’t.
Finally…white43 makes a very good point. In many ways I think you’ll find FAOL more valuable then any magazine.

I, too, love the Flyfishing and Fly tying magazine out of the UK. Can’t afford a “real” subscription to it, but it’s well worth the trip to Barnes and Noble each month to get a copy … plus I always get a treat in their bakery, and a cup of tea! (Cheesecake anyone?!?)
Trout, being a somewhat inquisitive bunch, are always curious about the English flies. They don’t see them real frequently around here (or WY, or SD), and, for me, always outfish the “normal” flies.
Trouts don’t live in ugly places
Forget the fishing rags. They read like advertisements for exotic fishing destinations and new, uber-tackle that isn’t that much better than the status quo. Some of them have decent columnists, but the quality is very mixed. As was noted above, this site is the best resource around.

The Drake is the exception to the rule… read at your own risk.
Dear Betty,
Might I recommend you try some Scottish flies, they will probably work even better.

I subscribed to several different ffing mags over the years, most of the popular ones.
I saved all of um. At one point I had several grocery sack full of um in my garage. Except for a new fly pattern most of the articles are rehash of an earlier one. There were several articles on almost every destination you can think of.
I found that everything I wanted to know could be found on the internet - here and other places. I have not subscribed to a ffin mag since and threw the sacks full away.
Oh, Donald! You are so right! I’m sorry to have omitted that in my original post! Your site has provided many fly patterns for me, and yes, they certainly do work very well!!
Trouts don’t live in ugly places
ecks,
If you are looking for information, the web is the place. Most mags are a constant rehash of previously offered info. They suffice for a bit, but redunduncy rears its’ ugly head all too soon. I subscribed to Fly Rod & Reel for many years, losing interest under the current editor, then to Fly Fisherman. It, too has lost its’ luster over time. If it is information you crave, there is so much available on the web. This site is a good place to start, but keep googling, and remember, seek, and you shall find.
Jeff
ps- where in the NE are you? More local info is available, if you know where to look.
I dunno…with my learning curve repetition ain’t necessarily a bad thing.
