Ok so I am getting a burnt on the standard flies tied for salt applications. Anyone over here in salty land have any good websites with a bunch of patterns and simple instructions for flies??? I have just about tied my self out of merkins and toads in the last few days and really need to break the boring cycle since I have limited amount of material and hooks at the moment I may just be looking but may decide to try something.
What fish and where at are you tying for in particular? Or just for general saltwater use? I’ve caught most of my fish in the salt in Florida on clousers or deceivers. If you’re burnt out on smallish crab patterns, some big 2/0 deceivers might break the monotony a little bit, it did for me, I even went as big as 8/0 for something really different than the size 16 nymphs I was working on. Next time I need a little break I think I will be tying up some of Al’s shimpfs just for fun. I don’t remember if its a FOTW or if it’s in his beginners series, but the pattern is somewhere in FAOL.
Thanks all, I really appreciate the links. As for what am I looking for… saltwater fly patterns in general. I have been trying to expand my tying for several years now and have ventured into dry flies (though I still rarely fish them and mostly stick with nymphs and streamers) and have recently needed to expand into salty stuffs so here I am… asking questions… thinking out loud… and hoping it all works out!!
SteveP, here’s a fish catching fly by a CHFF member & some other salt flies that have been very good on the mangrove shoreline & flats : http://www.lippedpopper.com/
