What are good flies to use to catch all types of snapper? I tried catching some of them over the weekend and all they did was follow my fly? Also, what lb. test leader do you use?
Thanks

I have caught a zillion of these guys in Belize. Generally, they are a pain in the butt since I am usually trying to catch someone else. They pretty much hit anything, but if I had to choose one fly it would be a chart/white clouser with a bit or even lots of flash generally in size 2 or smaller.
While they’re usually an inadvertant catch, I ran into a situation in Pine Island Sound in Florida that was interesting. I was casthing olive-and-white Clousers on a 6-weight and sinktip line into sand holes on a flat. I caught 20 mangrove (gray) snapper up to 14 inches on them. It was a lot of fun. A 14-inch snapper is formidable. I’ve caught number of mangrove snapper, but I’ve never really targetted them.
Recently, I caught about a half dozen lane snapper on fly (Clousers) near Boca Grande. They weren’t large, but they certainly were a pleasant surprise.
When it comes to snapper, you probably want to use a fluorocarbon leader. The lighter the better.
Think clousers for snapper! I like a #2 craft fur clouser, yellow/white with some root beer flash mixed in and red eyes. I find craft fur has better action than the stiffer bucktail on the smaller #2-6 clousers. :tieone:

If you can catch a bunch of them that would be some good eating.
