I’ve fished the Nine-Three and the Needebah, but never really got excited about traditional flat wings. I read Ken Abrames book several years ago and immediately got hyped on his Razzle Dazzle style flatwing deceivers. I played with the style for a few seasons and really found them to be excellent for late summer and autumn bass and hybrid wiper fishing. Anywhere there’s a population of gizzard shad that get to 5" long, this fly has worked.
Do you fish flatwings? I’m particularly interested in feedback from anyone who’s used these for big-water trout like Great Lakes browns. I’ve found this is a great largemouth fly, too.
I’ve posted full fly tying video through iTunes or at the FFO site if you want to download them.

I alway think of flatwings as big fish flys. My largest striped bass ever was on one and I have a lot of confidence in them
They have an undulating movement that I believe is very life-like
Mostly I tie 6-7’’ ones that imitate large sand eels, but I have some smaller ones in my trout, bass, and saltwater fly boxes also
My flies are certainly not works of art like those of Mr. Abrams, but I think it’s the action of these flies that make them fish so well.
I don’t tie “named” flies and I leave off the junglecock, but take the tying style and adapt it to colors I like to use
Yellow over white, chartreuse over white, olive over yellow over white, and purple over yellow over white are my favorites
I tie a “muddler” style flat wing that I like alot too. The hydraulics of water passing over the deer hair head makes the tail wiggle in a most enticing manner
I “borrowed” the idea for the flatwing muddler from Wellfleet, Mass. guide Jeff Smith
He’s a pretty innovative tier and and one of the best guides on the Cape.
I have tried tying some 2 to 3 inch ones to use for crappie. They did not work well as I don’t things the feathers had enough motion. It might also be that I would need to use better feathers to do it.
Now to use up some of the necks, capes, ect that I have and then to bug Denny.
