Fishing weekend

Hello everyone, just thought I would give a quick update on fishing in the Taupo region, I am just back from a weekend in Turangi and I must say the Tongariro is not fishing that well at the moment, it needs a good fresh to get things moving. We did manage 5 fish on Friday but none were fresh run.
On Saturday we moved over the ranges to the Wanganui river above Taumaruni and the fishing was fantastic, lots of good sized browns, some spooked some hooked and some [6] even landed. The biggest landed was about 6lb but we spooked some fish that looked to be about 2 or 3 lb heavier. Isn’t that always the way?
The fish were mostly spotted then fished to with small beadhead nymphs.
All the best.
Mike.

Mike, how is it for dry flies? Will they come up for any? And if so, which ?

J Castwell - Not at this time of year, at least not often but these same fish will hit a dry with relish during spring, summer and early autumn.
Small cadis and mayfly at the start of the season but big cicada drys [size 8]in late summer, this is very cool to see as they realy hit them, sometimes from 20 feet away, the trick being to realy to slam the fly down on the water to make a splash like a real cicada.
all the best.
