Fishing spots in Southern California

Hi

I live in the Los Angeles area and I am a beginner. Does anybody know of any good fishing destinations not too far from LA, say no more than an hour or two away?

I would appreciate any help! This forum is great btw! Real helpful.

I’d recommend you read the Richard Alden Bean Book “Fly Fishing Southern California’s Lakes & Streams.” Good-luck!

Do not overlook the ocean! There is a vast experience awiting those that venture into the surf to flycast for over a dozen species.

Do these three things to explore the surf flyfishing scene in SoCal.

  1. fliflicker.com
  2. garybulla.com
  3. Bob Marriott’s Flyshop in Anaheim

Then come back here to FAOL and ask a hundred more questions, see the fly archives, check out the Saltwater Board here and go fishing very soon.

The salt is a place you can fish everyother day all year long. To get to the fresh stuff-it is hours and hours of bumper to bumper for mostly stocked fish along trash ridden banks in the mountains. BTW-Watch your back when treking the woodland trails in California.

Flymaker2 is right. It kinda depends on where you are in the Los Angeles area. It can take two hours just to drive across it. Here’s another site you might check out…

There are many areas within 2 hours of you. There are both streams and lakes that have pretty good fishing. Send me an email and I can give you some specific places you could go. (I live in the San Bernardino Mountains–Running Springs to be exact–between Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear)

It is almost all folks from Southern California that post on this site and they discuss salt, freshwater and hiking opportunities in the S. California area.

Take a look at this site:

Seriously; take a look at it. It is one of the most complete perch surf fly fishing sites on the West Coast you will find. You can spend an enjoyable evening and learn a lot, looking at this site. I live several hundred more miles up the coast and have been able to use all these principles. In fact; all salt water fly fishers can benefit from the authors tips.

What really surprised me about the site is that it is in no way commercial as far as I can see!

I agree; “This forum is great btw! Real helpful.” FAOL is the best!

halieuo, In addition to the good advice you’ve already received, here’s a place that’s not that far from LA and has some great fishing opportunities. There is also a very good forum on the site that can be a great help in learning about the fishing in Southern California:
