Tonight, the local waters finally gave up a little top-water action with the Gills looking up. Fully dressed in Spring colors, they fought just as bold as their looks. While the evening gave up a few small bass as well, the Gills stole the show.
They really are beautiful fish aren’t they. I believe that pound for pound they are the hardest fighting fresh water fish in North America. Probably their most endearing trait is that they are most often the first fish caught by small kids which in turn gets the kids hooked on fishing.

They are fun! Especially once they get over 8". Gotta love the colors of the spawning males…
The smiles one gets to harvest when you get to Introduce ANY newbie to a pond full of 8"-9" BG’s is priceless…especially the kids. And they sure do seem to bring out the kid in most of us!
Any special bug, NJT?

Nice fish. Great fun to catch.

Lee, everything came up for a #10 Foam-Butt Caddis, with light elk wing. Including the bass that were caught.
GREAT looking bug and thanks,
Gonna tie up a few for around here. Gonna add a couple rubber spider legs too.

Done with a 1,2 or 3 weight and u really have fun.
I used to fish with my 2 wt, but I switched up my 3 wt as many of the bream I catch are pretty good sized 12-13+ inches and my 2 wt doesn’t have the backbone to keep them out of the submerged limbs and branches. Even with the 3 wt, they’ll pull the kayak around. Loads of fun though…

Look close, there are centipede legs on it in a delta, the same length as the hackle.
Nothing better that bluegill fishing to me. I think I would rather go bluegill fishing than tarpon fishing due to the fact that you will catch a lot more fish and if you match the rod to the fish, to me it’s just as much fun, and they aren’t near as tough to get to eat as the tarpon are.
I hope JohnScott would approve, what with the rubber legs and all…

Ed
Those are really nice sized Blue Gill and can undrestand why you stepped up to a 3 weight. Would not mind getting involved with fish that size!!
Oooh; nice! Hope I get a chance at some of those this weekend. Let’s see; 2wt? 3wt?..
