First Fly

Tied my first flies Saturday morning, a San Juan Worm and a foam beetle. Then went to a stream off of a small lake to try them out. As soon as my beetle hit the water, I had a largemouth on. Ended up catching 2 bass and a bluegill on that little beetle, and ended with 8 for the afternoon. I attribute it to beginners’ luck, but I could get used to this.

I don’t like the vise that came in my kit, does anyone know of a good vise in the $50-$75 range?

First, where are the pictures of these flies?

A San Juan Worm was my first fly, too. Haven’t caught a danged thing with one, though. Well, maybe some brush and the like. Foam bettles and ants can be very effective. Bet you can’t wait to tie more now.

As far as the vice goes, you will get as many opinions as there are folks that tie on this board. My first vice is one of these.

You can pick them up at Sportsman’s Warehouse and other places for around $36-$50. I have a Griffin Spyder, and another rotary vice that I don’t like nearly as well. It is so easy to mount a hook in this thing and have it stay put. I have tied everything from 2/0 to size 18 in it. It will work for the smaller hooks, but I don’t.

Congrats on catching the fish! Check out the DanVise… That’s what I’ve got and really like it.

I am tying some more flies this week and will post some pics soon.

Stay with it Baybum 79; Now that you have enteredthe world of fly Tying the future has very broad horizons with limitless scope for having fun.

Am looking forward to seeing some Photos of your work. Have Fun. Jax

Does he know how addicting this is

He’s about to find out.

What Jax really means, Baybum, is that you’re now completely effed like the rest of us. Welcome! “Misery” loves company.

All it takes is one fly and one catch and you’re done… Contrats on your fly tying venture.
The Danvise is a good vise for around that price, I bought one of those around 4 years ago and still love it.

Off topic, but a very smart former guide once told me that every farm boy knows to dunk worms in a creek after a rain.

Food for thought.

I sure hope nobody told you ‘‘Here, try some of this fly tying, you won’t get hooked.’’ !
Congratulations, it really is something great.

Poor guy, I almost feel sorry for him.

Second on the Crown vise. Works like a regal at way less than the price of a regal. That being said, I use my regal too.
