The weather was nice so I decided to go fishing. I went to my bike, only to find it has a flat tire. So I almost decide not to got, but instead I took my brothers bike. I finally got there, and only a small portion of the pond was unfrozen. After what may have been the worst time I ever spent fishing( tangles, wind, bad casting, snags) I decided to take out the fly rod. I only remembered to bring one fly(corn fly) and I had no leader. So i had to find a 3 foot peice of 10 LB mono and uni-knot it onto the fly line. Oh this day is going to be great I thought. I chummed some corn and there were clouds on the bottom near the corn. I tossed in the fly and went to gather up the rest of my gear to stay a while. When I came back to the rod, the line what ripping off the reel slowly. I picked it up and brought in a small brookie: My first real fish on th fly rod. I then caught 2 more brookies, and then caught a nice sized rainbow, and then finally caught a another smaller rainbow. I knew it was time to leave when a huge hunk of ice floated over and covered my fishing spot!
Since I only came for the 'gills, I didnt bring my tape measure, scale, or camera . But o well
Well were I fish the blue gill can be caught on anything. I have caught up to 30 in an hour without casting once. And at least the trout took some line
You are a better man than I Anthony, to brave the cold and ice for fish while lesser men (Like I) sit at the tying bench or build rods. My hat is off to you young sir, You are a great addition to this site.
Anthony, Good for you. There are many more adventures ahead of you, and many more fish.I’m glad you have joined our group. Anytime you have a question you’ve got my ear and I hope I can help. Tight Lines, Chris
When it comes to fly fishing and catching small fish …I think I may prefer Blue Gill over a lot of 12 inch and under Trout sometimes, you catch a 8 to 12 inch Blue Gill on a light weight rig and I think they have it all over a lot of trout…I know Blue Gill that big aren’t common everywhere, but we get them around here in a few places where the population isn’t stunted.
Im not against bluegill, I just get more satisfaction catching other species. Besides, I have caught way to many bluegill without catching a single, carp, bass or trout
Bluegill,
You still gotta give credit where it’s due…Hes actually disapointed that instead of catching a Carp…He only caught those pesky Lil trout!!!..LOL…Too Cute…lol…errr ummm Kewl!!
“I’ve often wondered why it is that so many anglers spend so much money on,and pay so much attention to.the details on the wrong end of the fly line.If they took as much care in selecting or tying their flies as they did in the selection of the reel and rod,They might be able to gain the real extra edge that makes it possible to fool a fish that has,in fact, seen it all before” A.K.Best
Everyone wants to excel in this sport but at the same time we let traditionalists place restrictions on our tactics, methods, and ideas. I always assumed that fly fishing was a sport that allowed imagination, creation, adaptation, investigation, dedication, education, revelation? : Fox Statler, On Spinners (Not the dainty Dry Fly kind) “Spinner’d Minner Fly”
Heres why i dont like the bluegill on the my rod: it isnt the full fly fishing experience, if you dont even have to cast. Dropping your tippet in the water is no different from fishing with a tree branch.
Besides, the bluegill at my pond are absoluetly tiny. It is seriosly a challange to put a tiny enough pecie of bread right on the tip of the hook to get them to bite. THey would need a size 9 billion hook.

Anthony,
Congrats! It IS fun catching multiple species.
I will add to the positive comments about bluegill. Once you tie into a good one, 8-10" or larger, you will understand why so many of us love them! I will add that large bluegill can be super selective & difficult to catch.

There is this tiny pond in a cemetary and it was stocked with 5-6 koi for decotaion. It is never fished, as most people wouldnt expect it to hold fish. It actually has a nice bluegill population for some reason. Most are only around 4-8 OZ but rarely, there are big ones. They have no natural predators, so they grow very big
I used a 6 weight just cuz that was what I have. I figure if I am trying for 20+ LB koi and bluegill at the same time, then 6 weight would be allright.
Great job Anthony. You speak of trout, ah yes the prefered quarry of most fly fishermen. Myself I fish for them all year long and thoroughly enjoy it, yet here it is almost spring and where did I find myself today? I took the long way home just so I could check out my favorite little bluegill haunt. It is still iced over and I pine for the day the ice is gone and the shallows start to warm so that I may entice those little bulls to the surface on my poppers with my new 2 wt. They keep me giggling all day long. This is the year I introduce my grandson and granddaughter to the joys of the bluegill. I can hardly wait.
