6’-6" 2pc. 4-5wt. with extra tip. It has maroon and gold wraps. I will put a second coat of varnish on after signing my name and rod specifics, then FlexCoat epoxy for the wraps.
First picture is of my modest building station. The rest will be of the rod. I have wrapped somemore but, haven’t taken pictures yet. I have posted these around so, if they look familiar, they probably are.
No, I did not split the Bamboo. I wish I had the knowledge and setup for that. The blank is a premade Tonkin blank from China. It is a solid blank. I would like to find a hollow made blank in a light weight, to do my next one and make the handle from cork rings.
Lookin gorgeous so far NewTyer1 - nice to see a bamboo rod post. Question: does a solid handle have an effect on the rod stiffness/action, as opposed to a cork handle? What about a rod that has cork all the way to the butt plate? Thanks.
I’m not really sure about that. They all have a blank that goes all the way through the handle , reel seat to butt cap. I would imagine that the cork may be a little more comfortable on the hands. I guess I will have to try both my bamboos when they are finished to find out. Or maybe someone will chime in with some experience. I just thought I would build something different.
The bump is where the ferrule tabs come up onto the cane. The tip of the bottom blank had to be narrowed by hand to fit into the ferrule, then I tapered the cane to allow the tabs to come up onto the cane. It was fitted, glued and then wrapped. Maybe I should have taken a little more off the blank to allow for the tabs but it is my first build and I don’t think it will hurt the action of the rod. Maybe someone could chime in and give some advise before I do the top two peices
Hi NewTyer1, Just looking at the pics you posted and just wanted to make a suggestion if I could? And I really hope you don’t take this as me picking apart your work because it’s certainly not meant to come across that way. But Looking at the pic of the ferule it looks like some thread wraps are wrapped over itslef which I’m guessing is because as you mentioned on the first page you had some issues with lapping the ferules and fitting issues. If you haven’t put the finish over the wraps yet one thing you can do is to put a thin coat of finish at the joint of the ferule before you wrap it. That will build up that area a bit as well as smooth it out so your wraps will lay down nice and smooth for you. I’ve had to do that a few times when I have done restoration jobs on cane rods where someone didn’t fit the ferules properly and it works out nicely.
What a kewl tip!! On one of the rods I repaired, I started the wrap at the end of the ferrule flaps (midway on the wrap), then wrapped to the ledge of the ferrule, THEN all the way back (over the first layer of wrappings), to where the wrap will logically end on the blank.
Thank you for the suggestions. I have rewrapped the ferrule, but I will certainly use the tip of building up the ferrule. It has really been bugging me. Thank you. By the way, I has since, rewrapped the hook saver.
Midwest Custom Fly Rods, I took your advise and unwrapped the ferrule. I then put a thin coat of FlexCoat on and after it dried, I rewrapped it and rewrapped the hook keeper. It looks 100 percent better. I then placed a finish coat on all the other wraps including the ferrule. It is now turning in the drier. I will post updated pictures soon. I will start the upper half of the rod sometime this week. I have found the spline and measured out for the eyes. I will also take the advise of preping the ferrules for the two tips and fit them much more properly now that I understand the concept. Thank you guys and ladies for your help.
